A family of four was left homeless on Tuesday after a fire roared
through their mobile home on Daniel's Trail in the Lakewood Trailer
Park, located off US 360.  Patricia Womack, her two teenaged daughters
and her two year old grandchild lost everything they owned as the fire
completely gutted the home they rented from Billy Ford.
South Boston firefighters, assisted by the Halifax Volunteer Fire
Department were called to the scene of the blaze on Lot 27 around 5:47
p.m. Tuesday. A fire department spokesman said they got the call from
the E-911 center, and he was not aware of who had reported it to them.
Firefighters remained on the scene for nearly two hours, leaving at
7:38 p.m.
The spokesman said his department had not been able to determine the
cause of the fire since the home was fully involved when they arrived,
and the heat from the blaze was so intense that it prevented their
being able to make any determination about how the fire might have
started. He noted that the Halifax County Sheriff's Department was
looking into the possible cause. The home, valued at $15,000, was a
total loss.
According to Ginger Weaver of the Halifax-Charlotte County Chapter of
the American Red Cross, her agency is trying to help the family by
offering services for shelter, clothing, groceries, etc. She said
family members were at home when the fire broke out, but were unable to
do anything to contain the blaze or to recover any of their belongings.
Anyone who may want to help the family may contact Weaver at
