An 86 year old Danville woman died late Saturday night after being
involved earlier in a traffic accident on U.S. 360 about four-tenths
mile east of its intersection with State Route 716 (Dan River Church
Road).
Lillian Turner Clark of Nordan Drive, Danville died some five hours
after the 6:45 p.m. crash at Halifax Regional Hospital where she had
been transported following the crash.
Mrs. Clark, who was driving a 2003 Buick, attempted to cross into the
westbound lane when she pulled in front of the 1999 International Ryder
rental truck which was being operated by Jim Shotwell, 55. of Stage
Coach Road, Nathalie. Investigating Virginia State Trooper P. W. Leath
estimated damages to the Buick at $15,000 and those to the Ryder truck
at $20,000. Shotwell complained of injury, but was not transported for
treatment. The accident remains under investigation.
Mrs. Clark's death brought to 15 the number of highway fatalities
recorded in Halifax County in 2007.
In another early Saturday accident on U.S. Route 58 about one-half mile
east of its intersection with State Route 658, Rodney T. Smith of
Richmond, 24, was charged with reckless driving by investigating
Virginia State Trooper D. J. Cline after the 1996 Toyota Camry he was
operating ran off the right side of the roadway, striking a tree. The
car then went off the left side of the roadway where it struck an
embankment. The driver reportedly fell asleep in the 12:20 a.m.
accident.
