County roads spelled tragedy this week as three residents lost their
lives on local highways since Sunday night, with all three deaths
coming in two separate single vehicle accidents.
On Sunday night around 10 p.m. 33 year old Sara Newcomb Bridges of
Lowery Road, South Boston and Victor Carrington Self, 37, of 7th
Street, Virgilina were declared dead at the scene on State Route 602 on
North Fork Church Road about two-tenths mile off Route 738, King Woods
Road.
Both Bridges and Self were passengers in a 1986 Ford Ranger truck that
ran off the right side of the roadway, striking a tree before
overturning. Two of Bridges' sons, a four year old and an eleven year
old, were also passengers in the truck and both were transported to
Halifax Regional Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The driver of the truck, Frederick Alan Quinn of South Boston, was
taken to the local hospital and then transferred to Duke University
Medical Center where he was listed in critical condition. None of the
occupants of the truck were believed to be wearing seat belts.
Charges are pending in the accident which is under investigation by
Virginia State Trooper P.W. Leath.
Then on Tuesday morning around 10:30 a.m. Pamela Carlene Farrar, 43, of
Coles Ferry Road, was northbound on State Route 625 (Ellis Creek Road)
about two miles from its intersection with State Route 624 when the
2006 Toyota Camry she was operating veered off the right side of the
roadway, striking two trees before overturning. Farrar, who was not
wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the car. She died about an hour
and a half later at 12:07 p.m. before she could be airlifted out.
Virginia State Trooper D. T. Spencer, who investigated the accident,
said Mrs. Farrar apparently fell asleep at the wheel after working a
midnight shift.
The three deaths brought to five the number of highway fatalities in
Halifax County so far in 2008, four of them coming in the month of
February.
In other reports from the State Police, a 48 year old Scottsburg man,
John W. Hudson, was charged with driving under the influence early
Saturday morning, February 16, 2008 at 5:37 a.m. The 1978 Chevrolet
Scottsdale truck Hudson was driving veered off the right side of U.S.
Route 58 about 100 feet west of its intersection with State Route 1018,
hitting a tree. Hudson was not injured but his vehicle suffered $600 in
damages according to investigating Virginia State Trooper P. W. Leath.
Also early Sunday morning, February 17 around 1 a.m. on State Route 658
about a tenth of a mile east of its intersection with US Route 501,
Terry S. Walton, 43, of South Boston was charged with reckless driving,
failure to maintain control. The 1997 Nissan Altima he was driving
veered off to the right of the roadway.
Walton came back onto the roadway and then went off the left side,
overturning with the vehicle coming to rest on its wheels. Walton was
not injured, and Trooper Leath estimated damages to the vehicle at
$1,500.
