The Halifax County Fair will live on... that is if Halifax County
Supervisors have their way. On Tuesday night ED#5 Supervisor James
Edmunds said he had just read in an out-of-town newspaper that this
year, its 97th year, would be the last year for the Halifax County
Fair.
"We can't let this happen," said Edmunds, noting that he has talked
with family members Les Powell and Jenny Wilkins about their continuing
interest in maintaining the annual event that county residents look
forward to each fall. "Both of them said they would help us, and they
have all the carnival contacts that are needed to bring the rides and
shows here," Edmunds said.
Halifax County has bought the fairgrounds property and the deal is
expected to be closed in October. However, the fair is already on
schedule for this year.
Edmunds volunteered to head an ad hoc committee to begin work on
scheduling and organizing fairs for the years to come. "We just need to
keep this going," he said. The fair offers not only rides and
entertainment, but showcases farm products, art, flowers and
handicrafts, as well as livestock exhibits and each year draws large
crowds during its weekly run.
