Healthy Living EXPO 2008

Special to the News & Record
Have you been promising yourself that, this time, you really are going
to make the commitment to healthier habits? Have you been wondering
just how healthy you are? Have you been thinking about making some
changes in your life but just don't know where to start?
Why not begin at Halifax Regional Health System's 2008 Healthy Living
Expo? This health fair extravaganza takes place on Sunday, February 24
from 1:00-3:00 at Halifax County High School and is free of charge.
At the Expo you'll be able to participate in free screenings to help
you know your numbers ñ the numbers that tell you just how you're
doing. Learn your blood pressure, and what to do if it is too high or
too low. Learn your body mass index and what to do to get it on track.
Learn your cholesterol and blood glucose levels - all it takes is one
quick stick of a finger- and learn what kind of lifestyle changes you
might want to make to prevent cardiovascular disease and stroke. This
year participants are encouraged to call 434-517-3946 to make an
appointment for this finger stick. Walk-ins are always welcome as space
is available, but appointments are encouraged.
Concerned about your medications? Meet with one of Halifax Regional's
pharmacists. Think you might be depressed? Take a depression/anxiety
screening and if your worries are justified, learn what to do about it.
While you're at it, learn something about stress management. Does
osteoporosis have you worried? Complete a risk factor questionnaire and
learn what to do next. Having trouble sleeping? Take a sleep disorder
screening and learn more about sleep studies and how they might help.
When was the last time you had a vision screening? Take one with the
Lions Club at the Expo.
Worried about diabetes? Talk with the experts about this debilitating
disease and what you can do about it. Overweight? Learn how you can
take control of your diet, sample some healthy food and take the recipe
home with you.
Kids ñ the Expo is for you, too. Join Halifax County 4-H in some
healthy and active games by participating in "A Taste of 4-H Camp."
Exercise your brain by scoping out the latest and greatest books from
the Halifax County/South Boston Public Library. Have a screening for
Amblyopia. Learn about the YMCA's after school program. Enjoy reading
time with Healthy Families.
Learn a variety of helpful and healthy things at the Expo. Test your
hand washing skills. Test your oxygen level. Relax with a one minute
massage. Ease your aching hands with a paraffin bath. Learn the
importance of advanced directives and take the first step to completing
a living will.
At the Expo you can learn about community resources and how they can
help. Learn about the Alzheimer's Association, the Halifax County
Cancer Association and DOVES. Pick up some pandemic influenza
preparedness tips from the Halifax County Health Department. Learn how
to sign up for Social Security benefits online. Talk with
representatives from the Halifax County Sheriffs Office and the South
Boston Police Department. Learn about the American Red Cross. Learn
about R.I.S.E. ñ Resource Information Sessions of Encouragement,
Halifax Regional's bereavement services and learn about Halifax Home
Health and Hospice services.
Worried about future long term care needs? Visit with representatives
from the Woodview, Seasons at The Woodview and MeadowView terrace to
see what those facilities offer. Learn about what a 64-slice CT scan
can tell you and how cardio-pulmonary rehabilitation can make and keep
you fit. Still a smoker? Check out the "Jar of Tar" and learn how to
take the first step to quitting.
All of this, and much more, including drawings for door prizes, is
waiting for you at Halifax Regional's 2008 Healthy Living Expo. It's
never too late to begin the journey to a healthier you.
