The unemployment rate in Halifax County dropped slightly in the month
of September to an even six percent, down from the August rate of 6.3
as only 949 residents of the 15,882 member civilian work force were job
hunting. However, the labor force also shrunk by 113 members as
students returned to schools and colleges. This September's rate was
just slightly lower than the 6.1 percent of September 2006 when 964
residents were looking for work.
Neighboring Mecklenburg County saw an even more significant drop in its
jobless sector with only 612 members of its 12,791 member civilian
labor force looking for work. Mecklenburg's rate dropped a full
percentage point from its August unemployed rate of 5.8 to only 4.8
percent in September. This September's rate was also lower than that of
September 2006 when it stood at 5.1 percent with 675 people unemployed.
Furthermore Charlotte County saw its jobless rate drop in September to
an even five percent as 261 members of the County's 5220 member
civilian labor force looked for jobs. In August their rate had stood at
5.4 percent with 279 residents unemployed. Last September Charlotte's
rate stood at 5.6 percent with 293 residents looking for work.
To the west Pittsylvania County's unemployment rate stood at 5.8, just
as it had in September 2006. Of the County's 31,766 member civilian
labor force, 1,854 residents were looking for work in September of 2007
as compared to 1,981 in August when the County's rate stood at 6.4
percent.
Statewide Virginia's jobless rate stood at 2.8 percent down from 3.1
percent in August. According to the Virginia Employment Commission this
September's statewide rate was the lowest for the month of September
since 2000 when the rate at that time was 2.2 percent.
Nationally the unemployment rate for September 2007 stood at 4.5
percent, up slightly from the 4.4 percent rate of September 2006.
