Tomorrow is Election Day in Halifax County and there is competition for
council seats in all four of the County's towns.
In South Boston Mayor Carroll Thackston is seeking re-election to the
seat he has held over the past years and is running unopposed. However,
there are four Council seats to be filled and five candidates are
seeking to capture those. Incumbent Council members Morris Bryant,
Coleman Speece and Sandra Thompson are seeking re-election while two
others are also in the race for the seats.
Newcomer to the political scene is Dr. Mark Morris who earlier said he
is anxious to work with Council and to be able to give back to the
community which has been good to him and his family.
Also seeking election to Council is Radford Trent, who served on the
Council before South Boston gave up its city status. Trent said
recently that his main concern is trying to bring more jobs,
particularly manufacturing ones, to the community.
In the Town of Halifax two seats on Council are being vacated. Both
Councilmen Phil Hollis and Charles Parker are not seeking re-election
and both are at-large members. Vying for the open seats are four
candidates — Bill Confroy, a former economic development director for
Halifax County, as well as a former banker; Holt Evans, a retired Air
Force colonel who grew up in the Town; Tommy Reagan, who currently
serves on the Town Planning Commission and represents the Town on the
Library Board; and Randy Savage, a school teacher and music teacher.
On important note for Halifax voters: despite the fact that the
candidates will not represent the specified wards of the Town, voters
will have to vote in their assigned ward precinct. For voters in Ward A
their polling place is at Christ Church, located on North Main Street;
voters in Ward B will vote in Town Hall; voters in Ward C will vote in
one of the mobile units behind Halifax Elementary School where signs
should direct them to the right place and voters in Ward D will vote in
the fellowship hall of Halifax Methodist Church on Mountain Road.
The Town of Scottsburg has six residents running for the five open
Council seats there. Russell I. Puckett, Jr., Robert D. Elliott, Harvey
Mark Perkins, James Edward Stoner, Connie Glass and Robert Guthrie all
are seeking election to Council. There is no contest for mayor with
incumbent Ira Wilkerson being the lone candidate.
Seven people have filed to run for the six seats available on Virgilina
Town Council. There is no contest in the Mayor's race where incumbent
Ralph Murray, Jr. is the only candidate. Running are Rufus Chandler,
Jr., Tammy Elliott, Mary Helen Gravitt, Kirke Hooper, Jason Johnson,
Thomas Keith Tuck and Ralph Owen Murray, Sr.
