Halifax County Registrar Judy Meeler is predicting "a good turnout" of
voters in the November 6 General Election. She attributed the surge in
interest to the Sheriff's race. "I think people are very interested in
that one," she explained.
Yesterday Meeler pointed out that she had 58 people come into her
office to register to vote prior to the October 9 deadline, bringing
the total number of County voters up to 21,306.
The Registrar said her office will be open all day on Saturday,
November 3 for residents to cast their absentee ballots in person. That
will be the last day that residents will be able to vote absentee in
person. She also noted that her office can mail out absentee ballots as
late as October 30, but they must be received back in her office by
Election Day. She said any ballots received after November 6 are
returned, unopened, to the Clerk's Office of the location from which
they were mailed.
County residents will have some choices to make with the Sheriff's race
between incumbent Sheriff Jeff Oakes and challenger Stanley Noblin
being the one that has generated the most interest. There is also a
race for the 15th District Senate seat between incumbent Senator Frank
Ruff and Clarksville Mayor Bob Wilkerson, who is seeking election to
that seat.
There are three contested races for the school board where in ED#4
incumbent trustee Joe Bailey is being challenged for his seat by South
Boston businessman Joe Gasperini. In ED#5 where there will be no names
on the ballot since no one qualified by the June deadline, two
newcomers are seeking election on write-in votes. Roger Long, a retired
educator and administrator, and Halifax County native Robert Wazeka,
Jr. are vying for the seat. In ED#7 incumbent trustee Sandra Rister is
seeking re-election and is being challenged by Stuart Comer, who
currently works for the Halifax Police Department.
Two other candidates are seeking election to the Halifax County School
Board, both of whom are running unopposed. In ED#1 Devin Snead is
running for the seat being vacated by Douglas Fisher and Walter Potts,
who served on the school board several years ago, is seeking to fill
the seat being vacated by Kelly Hill.
Several constitutional officers are also seeking re-election unopposed.
Clerk of Court Bobby Conner, Commonwealth's Attorney Kim Slayton White
and Commissioner of the Revenue Brenda Powell are all asking County
voters to return them to their current posts.
Also running without opposition for his seat in the state House of
Delegates is 60th District Delegate Clarke Hogan.
The five members of the County Board of Supervisors who are up for
re-election this fall are all unopposed: in ED#1 R. E. "Dickie" Abbott;
in ED#4 Douglas Bowman; in ED#5 James Edmunds; in ED#7 Lottie T. Nunn
and in ED#8 W.B. Claiborne.
