It's the Christmas holiday season and Downtown South Boston will be
decked out in holiday finery. The twinkling lights on the Bradford
Pears invite the townsfolk and visitors to stroll downtown and slip
back in time to Christmas Past, when thoughts of peace, goodwill toward
our fellowman and sugarplums filled our hearts and made us happy!
Thus the stage is set for "A Holiday Tradition in Downtown South
Boston" — the 21st Annual Christmas Open House on Sunday, November 18
from 1 p.m.-5 p.m.
What's Happening During Christmas Open House
Cookie Cottage Making is Fun For Kids
Destination Downtown South Boston will sponsor a Cookie Cottage
Workshop at the Downtown Christmas Open House on Sunday, November 18
from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. at South Boston United Martial Arts, 323 Main
Street.
Children between the ages of three and twelve can construct a
decorative cookie cottage using graham crackers, bright colored candy
and sticky icing. All these materials are provided for a $3 donation
and Helping Hands for Humanity members from HCHS will be on hand to
supervise.
Starting with a half-pint milk carton, children use frosting as glue to
cement graham crackers to the carton, creating the basic structure.
Then each child uses an array of decorative material, secured by
additional frosting, to create masterpiece cottages.
Candy, cake decorating sprinkles, star marshmallows, pretzels, cereals
and snack foods like bugles become fences, chimneys, windows, and
colorful, unique architectural features. Ice cream cones slathered with
green frosting become landscape trees, and chex cereal becomes
shingles.
Some of the candy never seems to make it to the cottage, but children
always end up carrying away their masterpieces proudly, with smiling
parents promising a place on the mantle!
Parents may drop children off at the workshop then have a look around
Downtown during the Open House, or stay and watch their creative genius
at work.
Santa Pictures
Don't forget to also get your picture taken with Santa at South Boston
United Martial Arts between the hours of 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. There will be
a small fee for a photo or feel free to bring your own camera.
Downtown Stores Open
The Downtown Stores will open their doors for their customers' holiday
shopping pleasure and some participating stores will offer
refreshments.
