Applications are in the mail to Halifax County vehicle owners for
purchasing 2008 County windshield decals. Decals can be purchased
beginning March 3, 2008 by return mail or at the County Treasurer's
Office in the Mary Bethune Office Complex in Halifax. A return
envelope is included for your convenience. As before, all personal
property taxes must be paid before decals can be issued. Those having
unpaid taxes may still wish to come to the County Treasurer's Office to
pay taxes and get their decals. The deadline for displaying 2008
county decals is before April 15. To avoid last minute mailing or long
lines, please try to get your decals early.
Preprinted data from DMV records is used. Vehicle owners are asked to
fill in all information that is required on the front of the form and
return all signed copies to the County Treasurer's Office. Decal fees
are printed on the back of the form. Because of State fee changes,
there are changes in fees for farm vehicles and national guards. When
issuing the decals, a receipt copy and decal will be returned to the
vehicle owner.
As in past years, State law requires vehicle owners to indicate the
usage of their vehicle for the State personal property tax relief as
either business use or personal use. This information is printed on
the back of the application. Additional information on vehicle
assessments can be answered by calling 476-3314. Enter vehicle
odometer mileage in space provided on the form, especially vehicles
over 100,000 miles.
Those vehicle owners not receiving applications may call 476-3318 or
come by the office and bring their current Virginia state registration
cards. Any town resident that received an application in error will
need to go to their Town office and get a Town decal.
DO NOT go to the DMV office to get County decals. The County decals
are only available through the County Treasurer's Office. Office hours
in Halifax are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Remember, the deadline to display your 2008 windshield decal is before
April 15, 2008.
Another reminder, the 2008 County dog tags should already be displayed
on dogs. If you have not purchased the 2008 tag for your dog, please
bring a current rabies vaccination paper to the County Treasurer's
Office. Regular tags are $5.00. Because of State law changes, do not
go to the Town of South Boston Finance Office to purchase dog tags.
