National Day of Prayer Set Thursday, May 1
 
The 57th National Day of Prayer will be held Thursday, May 1 and locally Halifax County/South Boston will observe the special day beginning at 6:45 a.m. with a free breakfast at The Prizery, 700 Bruce Street, South Boston and continuing until 8 a.m. According to prayer committee members Larry Clark and Larry McPeters,
the theme for this years Day of Prayer is PRAYER ! Americas Strength and Shield that is based on Psalm 28:7.
Guest speaker for this yearís event is Dr. Tommy McDearis, pastor of Blacksburg Baptist Church.
McDearis was called on to tell more than 20 families a loved one had fallen victim to Virginia Tech gunman Seung-Hui Cho. McDearis†has served as BBC's senior pastor since 1997. A caring and highly respected pastor, he is known for his passionate faith, jovial sense of humor, commitment to personal outreach, and for his community, social and denominational activism. He is also known as a relational communicator who presents biblically-based sermons that illustrate the Good News of Jesus Christ through scriptural exposition and the use of multiple, true-to-life stories. In addition to his highly gregarious and relational ministry style, McDearis holds multiple academic degrees including an earned doctorate in pastoral ministry and applied theology, and training in clinical
pastoral counseling from Southeastern Seminary, Wake Forest, N.C. and the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He is married to Susan, his wife of 25 years. They have three children, Brandon, Eric and Kathryn.
Persons interested in attending the prayer breakfast can pre-register by calling the Dan River Baptist Association office at 434-572-2608. Anyone wishing to make donations to the Day of Prayer can make checks
payable to Halifax County Prayer Day, P. O. Box 885, Halifax, Va. 24558 prior to April 15. All donations will be used for food and beverages, facilities, decorations, memorabilia for participants and expenses for the guest
speaker.
