Members of the Crossing of the Dan Committee have revealed exciting
plans for the upcoming celebration of the 227th anniversary of this
historic event. Meeting on Tuesday at The Prizery, members announced a
two day schedule of events, commemorating General Nathanael Greene's
crossing of the Dan River on February 14, 1781 at Irwin and Boyd's
ferries in Halifax County.
On Friday evening, Februry 8, 2008 there will be period music and
school presentations of the Crossings' story. Saturday, February 9,
2008
features a full schedule of events, beginning with music by the
Guilford Court House Fife & Drum Corps, followed by remarks from
Halifax County and South Boston officials. Then comes the raising of
the Betsy Ross Flag, followed by the pledge of allegiance, the
invocation, and a wreath laying ceremony. Winners in the student
competition will then be announced.
A guest speaker who has yet to be identified will bring the morning's
message after which bateau rides across the Dan and a pilgrimage to the
Crossing site at Boyd's Ferry will be offered.
The event is being sponsored by the local DAR chapter, the Dan River
Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution and co-sponsored by the
local historical society, the Town of South Boston, the Halifax County
Department of Tourism, The Prizery and the Dan River Basin Association.
Anyone interested in helping to support or praticipating in the
upcoming celebration is asked to contact Anne Raab, Vice Regent of the
Berryman Green Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution at
