Oxford woman seriously injured in auto accident
A 27 year old Oxford, NC woman was seriously injured on Wednesday morning in a single vehicle accident in the Virgilina community. Melissa Kittrell, the driver of a 1999 Ford Contour, veered off the right side of State Route 735, about two-tenths mile east of its intersection with State Route 734 around 9:10 a.m. The car then struck a mailbox and overturned. The driver was moved about one-half mile to the former Virgilina Elementary School property where she was airlifted to Duke University Medical Center for treatment. Investigating Virginia State Trooper D. J. Cline said Kittrell, who was not wearing a seat belt, was alone after having just dropped off her child prior to the accident. The accident remains under investigation. Earlier on Tuesday afternoon, two drivers collided on Broad Street in the Town of South Boston when Dena J. McCready, 33, of Virgilina the driver of a 1993 Oldsmobile, attempted to change lanes and the back end of her car hit the front end of the 1987 Oldsmobile operated by 71 year old Ada M. Martin of South Boston. Both vehicles were declared total losses. The drivers and a juvenile passenger in the 1993 Oldsmobile suffered minor injuries. Investigating South Boston Police Officer Aaron Forbes charged McCready with failure to yield the right-of-way. |
