Corliss Sydnor Faulkner
Ms. Corliss Sydnor Faulkner of 104 Love Shop Road, South Boston died Saturday, February 14, 2009 in South Boston at the age of 42.
Born in Halifax County on January 2, 1967, she was the daughter of the late Mr. Charlie Edward Sydnor and Mrs. Dorothy Richardson Sydnor and was a member of the White Oak Fork Baptist Church.
Ms. Faulkner is survived by one daughter, Miss Cherri Faulkner of South Boston, a brother, Mr. Charles Sydnor of Virgilina and a host of aunts, uncles cousins, other relatives and friends.
A funeral service for Ms. Faulkner will be conducted on Thursday, February 19 at 1 p.m. at the White Oak Fork Baptist Church with the Rev. Glenn Faulkner officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home, 104 Love Shop Park Road, Lot #32, South Boston.
Nannie Elam Hunter
Mrs. Nannie Elam Hunter, 86, of 2061 Bacon School Road, Saxe died Saturday, February 14, 2009 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was born in Charlotte County on June 11, 1922, daughter of the late Mr. William Henry Elam and Mrs. Mary Jane Price Elam and was married to the late Mr. Elliott Russell Hunter, Sr. She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church and a retired Charlotte County Public School teacher.
She is survived by two sons, Mr. Elliott Russell Hunter, Jr. of Springfield and Mr. Pernell Derrick Hunter of Bowie, MD; two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Laneta D. Hunter and Mrs. Danita F. Hunter; two grandchildren, Ms. Janelle L. Hunter and Ms. Alexis D. Hunter; seven sisters, Mrs. Jennie E. Faulkner of South Boston, Mrs. Rosa E. Evans of Townsville, NC, Mrs. Ruth E. Brogdon of Saxe, Mrs. Mattie E. Harris of Baltimore, MD, Dr. J. Corene Elam and Dr. Ada M. Elam, both of Bowie, MD, and Mrs. Annie E. Bailey of Halifax; two brothers, Mr. James H. Elam of Beltsville, MD and Retired Colonel Otis J. Elam of Fairfax Station; devoted niece, Ms. Shannon Brodon-Grantham, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by three brothers, infant Charles E. Elam, Mr. Willie L. Elam and Mr. M. David Elam.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 21 at noon at Shiloh Baptist Church, Drakes Branch, with Rev. S. Hugo Womack, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church Friday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and other times at the home. Grace Lowery Shotwell
Mrs. Grace Lowery Shotwell, 90, of 103 Rosehill Drive, South Boston died Tuesday, February 17, 2009 at The Woodview. She was born in Halifax County on April 28, 1918, daughter of the late Babe and Ida Harris Lowery and was married to the late Henry Alfred Shotwell. She was a member of Ephesus Baptist Church and a homemaker.
She is survived by sons, Robert Wayne Shotwell and wife Lorene and Alfred Ray Shotwell and wife Bonnie, all of Alton; daughters, Margaret Shotwell Ford of South Boston and Nancy Shotwell Poythress and husband Tommy of Alton; eight grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Erlene Shotwell and a son-in-law, Ralph Ford.
Funeral services will be held Friday, February 20 at 2:00 p.m. at Alton Baptist Church with Rev. L.L. Watlington and Rev. Dennis Ball officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home.
Mr. Joseph Crews of Nathalie died Saturday, February 14, 2009 in Lynchburg at the age of 70. He was a member of the New Shiloh Baptist Church where he served on the Usher Board.
Mr. Crews is survived by his devoted wife, Sallie Crews of the home, two sons, Joseph and Timothy of Lynchburg, a daughter, Elizabeth Crews-Boyd of the home, a granddaughter, Zharina Emily Crews of Lynchburg, a grandson, Johnathan Boyd of the home, a sister, Carolina Crews of the home, a cousin (whom he called a daughter at times), Mary Hodges of South Boston, four aunts, Margaret Barbour of Nathalie, Queenie Jennings of Hyattsville, MD, Bessie Garner of Washington, DC and Louise Crews of Nathalie, one uncle, Ezekiel Crews of Nathalie and a host of other relatives and friends.
A funeral service for Mr. Crews will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, February 19 at the New Shiloh Baptist Church in Nathalie with Rev. Otis Dillard officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home.
Sandy Troy Chandler
Mr. Sandy Troy Chandler, 45, of Oak Level Road, Halifax died February 14, 2009. He was born in Halifax County on October 11, 1963, a son of Ms. Louise Chandler. He was married to Mrs. Lethia Ferrell Chandler, was a member of Berry Hill Baptist Church and was employed by Lindstrand USA, Inc.
In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by one daughter, Ms. Tanesha Nicole Chandler of Greensboro, NC; one son, Mr. Troy Deshaun Chandler of Halifax; one granddaughter, Janiyah L. Parrish; three brothers, Mr. Harvey Chandler of Halifax, Mr. Mark Chandler of Scottsburg and Mr. Stephon Chandler of Danville; two sisters, Ms. Michele McLaurin of Hyattsville, MD and Mrs. Stephanie Barksdale of Newport News; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Mary Chandler, Mrs. Lona Chandler and Mrs. Nakita Chandler; two brothers-in-law, Mr. Carroll McLaurin and Mr. Michael Barksdale, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 18 at Berry Hill Baptist Church with Rev. John Leigh officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Julia Moore Marable
Mrs. Julia Moore Marable, 87, of South Boston died Saturday, February 14, 2009 at Berry Hill Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Halifax County on December 23, 1921, daughter of the late Mr. Alex Moore and Mrs. MaLinda Crews Moore. She was married to the late Mr. Douglas Marable and was a member of New Arbor Baptist Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Deloris Ferrell of South Boston; two sons, Mr. Lewis Ferrell of Nathalie and Mr. Ronnie Marable of South Boston; five sisters, Mrs. Arnita Vass and Mrs. Ardelia Boyd, both of South Boston, Mrs. Caroline Owens and Mrs. Ruby Collins, both of Evanston, IL and Mrs. Mable Smith of Danville; four step-daughters, Mrs. Elnora White of Keeling, Mrs. Lois Younger of Vernon Hill, Mrs. Brenda Armstead of Richmond and Mrs. Gloria Williams of Halifax; 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; one son-in-law, Mr. Edward Ferrell; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Elsie Ferrell; one brother-in-law, three sisters-in-law, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Mr. Henry Moore, Mr. Archie Moore, Mr. James Moore and Mr. Jessie Moore.
Funeral services will be held Friday, February 20 at 1:00 p.m. at New Arbor Baptist Church with Rev. Nelson Stamps officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at 1005 Glenn Hill Farm Road, South Boston.
