Carroll Dean Moore

Mr. Carroll Dean Moore of 746 Magnolia Drive, South Boston died Monday, December 29, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was born in Halifax County on January 3, 1950 and was 58 at the time of his death. He was the son of the late Lacy G. Moore and Gladys C. Moore.
Mr. Moore is survived by a number of cousins.
A graveside service for Mr. Moore will be conducted on Thursday, January 1, 2009 at 1 p.m. at Halifax Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Grant Dyer officiating.

Lewis Harrison Stevens

Mr. Lewis Harrison Stevens of 8238 LP Bailey Highway, Nathalie died Tuesday, December 30, 2008 at his home. Born May 11, 1936 in Halifax County, he was 72 at the time of his death. He was a son of the late Richard Dick Stevens and Arnie Richie Waller Stevens and was a retiree of Burlington Industries.
Mr. Stevens is survived by two daughters, Kathy S. Granger and husband, Bill of Henderson, NC and Judy K. Stevens and friend Ricky Mulchi of Halifax and a son, Danny Stevens and wife, Mary Jo of Nathalie; also a lifelong friend, Barbara Rudd of Nathalie, five grandchildren, Erica Conner of Halifax, Mandy Loftis of South Boston, Sara Stevens, David Douglas and Ryan Anderson, all of Nathalie, and two great grandchildren, Deonna and Dakota Loftis of South Boston. He was preceded in death by a brother, Floyd Stevens.
A graveside service for Mr. Stevens will be conducted on Thursday, January 1, 2009 at 2 p.m. at the Stevens Family Cemetery, Clinton Road, Republican Grove, VA with the Rev. Coy Terry officiating. Joseph Lee Seamster

Joseph Lee Seamster of 1084 Throckmorton Trail, Scottsburg died Monday, December 29, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. The baby was born that same day at the same location.
Surviving are the baby’s mother and father, Frances Newcomb Seamster and George Seamster of Scottsburg, a brother, Barry Klasen of South Hill, three sisters, Heather Upton and Jennifer Seamster of South Hill and Sarah Seamster of Scottsburg, his maternal grandparents, Allen and Mary Newcomb of Clover and his paternal grandmother, Lula Seamster of Scottsburg. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Jack Seamster.
A graveside service for the child will be conducted on Friday, January 2 at 1 p.m. at the Church of God of Prophecy Cemetery with the Rev. Stephen Byrd officiating. Willie Thomas “Bill” Cardwell

Mr. Willie Thomas “Bill” Cardwell, 79, of 7246 Forest Hill Avenue, Richmond died Sunday, December 28, 2008 at Ruxton of Stratford Hill, Richmond. He was born in Durham, NC on January 14, 1928, son of the late Albert Coy Cardwell and Addie Bell Cardwell.
He is survived by one brother, Luther Cardwell of Virginia Beach; one sister, Lillie Cardwell Jarvis; two nephews, Marshall Cardwell and Michael Cardwell.
Graveside services will be held Friday, January 2 at 11:00 a.m. at Clover Cemetery with Rev. Don Bryant officiating.

Betty Frances Womack Smith

Mrs. Betty Frances Womack Smith, 55, of 1143 Beulah Road, Nathalie died December 29, 2008 at her home. She was born in Halifax County on February 7, 1953, a daughter of Frances McCormick Womack and the late Lynn Cephus “L.C.” Womack. She was married to the late John Presley Smith, Sr.
In addition to her mother, Betty is survived by two sons, Chris Womack and wife Michelle of Vernon Hill and Presley Smith of Nathalie; one daughter, Brandi Thompson and husband Joey of Virgilina; one step-son, J.P. Smith of Nathalie, one step-daughter, Wanda Saunders and husband Phil of Halifax and seven grandchildren. Also surviving are her sisters, Susan Womack and Mary Womack, both of Vernon Hill and brother, Lynn Womack of Halifax.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 31 at Powell Funeral Home with Rev. Joe Lotts officiating. Burial followed in the Womack Family Cemetery, Pine Ridge Trail, Vernon Hill.

William “Bunk” N. Fleischer

Mr. William “Bunk” Norris Fleischer, 94, of 1080 Traynham Grove Road, Alton died Sunday, December 28, 2008 at his home. He was born in Baltimore, MD on January 24, 1914, a son of the late Henry Fleischer and Helen Gilbert Fleischer and was married to the late Audrey Geyer Fleischer. He was one of Jehovah Witnesses for 54 years.
He is survived by one daughter, Jean Stacy and husband Douglas of Alton; one brother, Elmer C. Fleischer of Baltimore, MD; one granddaughter, Rebekah Jean Stacy Howell and husband Allan; two nephews, Bryant and Craig Fleischer; one niece, Lisa White. He was preceded in death by one brother, Henry Fleischer.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 31 at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses with Brother Douglas Stacy and Brother Larry Rice officiating. Burial followed in Halifax Memorial Gardens.

Mary Elizabeth Critcher Huff

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Critcher Huff, 86, widow of Flem Edward Huff, died Sunday, December 28, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. A daughter of William Claude and Helen Hayes Critcher, Elizabeth was native to Granville County, NC and graduated from Oak Hill High School with the Class of 1940. She retired from Burlington Industries in 1984 with 33 years of service.
She is survived by her sons, Claude Edward Huff and his wife Moneta of Halifax and Robert Wayne Huff and his wife Patricia of Clarksville; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by daughter, June Carol Garner.
Funeral services were held Wednesday in the chapel at Watkins Cooper Lyon with the Reverend Greg Randall officiating. Interment followed in Oakhurst Cemetery.

Ellen Cassada Johnson

Ms. Ellen Cassada Johnson, 53, of 2121 Grubby Road, Halifax died December 28, 2008 at Sentara Hospital, Williamsburg. She was born in Halifax County on July 12, 1955, a daughter of Dorothy Powell Cassada and the late Charles D. Cassada. She was a member of First Baptist Church, South Boston and retired as a guidance counselor with Amherst County Public School System.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by a host of cousins.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 31 at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Susan Davis officiating. Burial followed in Halifax Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be directed to the Halifax County Humane Society, P.O. Box 969, South Boston, VA 24592.
