Misty Lloyd Dickerson

Misty Lloyd Dickerson of 1051 Bold Springs Road, South Boston died Wednesday, December 24, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Born February 14, 1977 in Newberrry, S.C., she was 31 at the time of her death. Ms. Dickerson was a member of Ash Avenue Baptist Church and was an executive assistant for Team Nurse.
She is survived by her parents, Sherrie Lowery Lloyd and Clifton Lloyd, Jr. of South Boston, a daughter, Haley Nicole Dickerson and a son, Dane Thomas Dickerson, both of South Boston and her fiance’ Chad Downey of Buffalo Junction. Also surviving are a special aunt and uncle, Peggy L and Jimmy Vassar of South Boston, She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Virginia and Clifton Lloyd, Sr.
A funeral service for Ms. Dickerson will be conducted today, Monday, December 29 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. John Eure officiating. Burial will follow in Black Walnut Church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of her parents, 325 Magnolia Drive, South Boston.

Chrystal Slayton Harris

Ms. Chrystal “Christy” Slayton Harris of 2088 Sandy Beach Road, South Boston died Friday, December 26, 2008 at her home. Born December 20, 1971 in Oxford, Ala., she was 37 at the time of her death.
Ms. Harris is survived by a daughter, Katlynn Marie Harris and a son, Robert lee Hunter Harris Jr., both of Nathalie, two sisters, Cynthia Slayton White of Richmond and Candice Slayton of Nathalie, her paternal grandmother, Nadine Slayton of Vernon Hill and her maternal grandmother, Mary Lelia Weatherford of South Boston, a special friend, Jerry Osborne of South Boston and nephews, B. W. Sprouse and Tyler Gibson and husband, Robert Lee Harris Sr. of Nathalie. She was loved by her many friends and family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lynwood Weatherford Slayton and Florence Weatherford Slayton, her paternal grandfather, Lynwood David Slayton and her maternal grandfather, James Edward Weatherford.
A funeral service for Ms. Harris will be conducted on Tuesday, December 30, 2008 at 2 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Carl Burger officiating. Burial will follow in the Slayton Family cemetery. Those wishing to give memorials are asked to please consider a favorite charity.

Fauntly David Comer

Mr. Fauntly David Comer of 2092 Dan River Church Road, South Boston died Wednesday, December 24, 2008 at Berry Hill Nursing Home. Born February 14, 1917 in Halifax County, he was 91 at the time of his death. He was a member of Dan River Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and usher. He was a retired employee of the J.P. Stevens Company.
Mr. Comer is survived by three daughters, Priscilla Garrido of Santo Domingo, DR, Sarah C. Stevens and husband Mark of Virgilina and Elaine Comer of Alexandria, a brother, Richard Comer of Harve-De_Grace, Md., six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alma Frazier Comer, his parents, Richard Henry Comer and Hettie Talley Comer, two sisters, Elsie Comer Tidwell and Edith Comer Pruitt and a brother, James William Comer.
A funeral service for Mr. Comer will be conducted on Monday, December 29 at 2 p.m. at Dan River Baptist Church with the Rev. Doug Gibson and the Rev. William Coghill officiating. Burial will follow in the Dan River Baptist Church cemetery. Sadie Thomas Newby

Mrs. Sadie Thomas Newby of 1074 Wallace Cole Road, South Boston died Saturday, December 27, 2008 at The Woodview. Born June 22, 1919 in Caswell County, NC, she was 89 at the time of her death. Mrs. Newby was a member of Second Baptist Church where she was formerly the director of the nursery and a member of the choir. She was also a member of the Woodman of the World and was a retired employee of the Halifax Cotton Mill.
She is survived by four grandsons, Freddy Newby, Jr. and wife Kim of South Boston, Joel and Dwayne Newby, both of Trinity, N.C. and Dwight Newby of Randleman, N.C., a granddaughter, Rhonda Newby of Trinity, and eight great grandchildren; a special nephew, Joe Walker and wife, Cornelia of Thomasville, N.C., a sister-in-law, Sylvia Thomas of Alton and a daughter-in-law, Rita H. Carven of Sanford, N.C. She was preceded in death by her husband, Murlin Enzy “Shorty”Newby, her parents, William H. Thomas and Willie McKee Thomas, sons, Ernie Newby and Freddy Newby Sr., sisters, Lillie Cumbie and Virgie Walker and brothers, George, Nathan and Earley Thomas.
A funeral service for Mrs. Newby will be conducted on Tuesday, December 30 at 11 a.m. at Second Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Linderman, Rev. Jim Smith and Rev. Ronnie Snead officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and at other times at the home, 1074 Wallace Cole Road, South Boston, VA.

Debra Janice Maith Leigh

Mrs. Debra Janice Maith Leigh of 2047 East Hyco Road, South Boston died Wednesday, December 24, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Born in Washington, DC on October 2, 1951, she was 57 at the time of her death. She was the daughter of Mrs. Rebecca Maith Porter and the late Mr. Tom Curry and was raised by the late Mrs. Elsie Carey Smith. She was married to Mr. William Roger Leigh and was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Mrs. Leigh was employed for many years by Riggs National Bank in Washington and was later employed by Wal-Mart in South Boston.
Mrs. Leigh is survived by her husband of the home, a daughter, Ms. Nicy Leigh of Washington, DC, her mother of Callao, a sister, Ms. Romas Maith of Washington, four brothers, Mr. Audwin Porter of Richmond, Mr. Gilbert Maith of Callao, Mr. Sylvester Maith of Maryland and Mr. Charles Maith of California and a host of other relatives and friends, including the devoted Ms. Grace Plummer and Mr. Tom Fincham. She was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Terrence Maith and a brother, Mr. Albert Porter.
A funeral service for Mrs. Leigh was conducted on Sunday, December 28 at 11:30 a.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Frederick Eily officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends at the home, 2047 East Hyco Road, South Boston.
