OBITUARIES
Kenneth Edward Gieselman
Kenneth Edward Gieselman of Culpeper, Virginia, died peacefully December 15, 2008 in the Hospice of the Piedmont, 501 Park Street, Charlottesville, Virginia at the age of 88. Kenneth was born January 31, 1920, in Burlington, Iowa, to Henry A. Gieselman and Sophia Neukum Gieselman. He served in the U.S. Army, four years in the European Theater; was Deputy Director for the VeteranÕs Administration in cities in North America and briefly abroad; was a member of the Mid-Day Lions Club of Culpeper, member of the Kena Temple Shriners of Fairfax, Virginia; member of the Culpeper United Methodist Church and the VFW Post 2524 of Culpeper.
As a young man, Ken was an excellent tennis player. He was a pilot at age sixteen, and enjoyed flying for many years. In college, he appeared in various dramatic productions on stage. KenÕs two fondest activities were traveling Ð which he and his wife Eleanor did extensively Ð and going out to eat with friends and family Ð which they did often. In years past, Mr. Gieselman was heavily involved in the local chapter of the American Heart Association, Chairman of the Culpeper County Republican Party and numerous other civic activities. Virtually everyone who knew Ken recognized he was an organizational genius. And he was. Ken Gieselman was a gentleman and a study in contrast. He will be fondly missed.
Surviving Kenneth are his wife, Eleanor Audrey Mills Gieselman of Culpeper, Virginia, sons: J. Richard Gieselman and his wife Christine of NorthTopsail Beach, North Carolina; and Gregory Mills Gieselman of Houston, Texas; and two grandsons: J. Ryan Gieselman and J. Scott Gieselman of North Topsail Beach, North Carolina.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Sunday, December 21, 2008 at Clore-English Funeral Home, 11190 James Monroe Highway,Culpeper, Virginia 22701. Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 22, 2008 in the Clore-English Funeral Home Chapel at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Bob Donnelly and Pastor Randy Orndorff conducting services. Burial will follow in Culpeper National Cemetery, 501 East Chandler Street, Culpeper, Virginia with full military honors provided by the VFW Post 2524 Honor Guard and the American Legion Post 330 Honor Guard, both of Culpeper.
Gentleman serving as active pallbearers are Mr. J. Ryan Gieselman of North Topsail Beach, NC, Mr. Philip Keyser of Culpeper, Mr. Matthew Mills-Atkins of Culpeper, Mr. Rodney Mills of Culpeper, Mr. Neil Seek of Culpeper, and Mr. Terry Woodward of the Groves, VA.

Randolph, USA (Ret.) of Culpeper and Mr. Russ Thomas of Burlington, Iowa.

Benjamin Anderson Jr.
Mr. Benjamin Anderson Jr. of 1084 Woods Creek Lane, Scottsburg died Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at Community Memorial Hospital in South Hill at the age of 78. Born in Jacksonville, Florida on May 30, 1930, to the late Mr. Benjamin Anderson, Sr. and Mrs. Mary Louise Stewart Anderson, he was married to Mrs. Janet Anderson and was a United States Army veteran.
Mr. Anderson is survived by his wife, a daughter, Mrs. Janet Mason of Clover, two sons, Mr. James Darden of Clover and Mr. Antonio Darden of Scottsburg, a sister, Ms. Francine Stewart of Jacksonville, FL, 26 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren, one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Cheryl Darden and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Mrs. Gwendolyn Darden, two sons, Mr. John Darden and Mr. Daniel Darden and two brothers, Mr. Frank Edwards and Mr. John Edwards.
Public viewing for Mr. Anderson will begin Monday, December 22 at 10 a.m. at the Crawford House Chapel in Halifax where funeral services will be held Monday at 3 p.m. The family will receive friends at the residence, 1084 Woods Creek Lane, Scottsburg.
John Otie Conner
Mr. John Otie "Buck" Conner of 2011 Eastover Drive, South Boston died Saturday, December 20, 2008 at his home. Born November 15, 1934 in Halifax County, he was 74 at the time of his death. He was a member of Hunting Creek Baptist Church and was an electrician.
Mr. Conner is survived by his wife, Bernice Inez Smith Conner of the home, a daughter, Janice Duffey and husband, Junior of Clover, a step son, Dennis Bass of Brooklyn, NY and a sister, Anna Lacks of Saxe and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Granville J. Conner and Lelia Martin Conner, three sons, Lee Conner, William Conner and Harry Conner, and three sisters, Mary Conner, Nannie Seamster and Ida Hazelwood.
A funeral service for Mr. Conner will be conducted on Monday, December 22 at 2 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. W. D. Mills officiating. Myrtle Alice W. Vernon
Mrs. Myrtle Alice Williamson Vernon of 1223 Mt. Carmel Road, Alton, died Saturday, December 20, 2008 at her home. Born in Halifax on October 27, 1921, she was 87 at the time of her death. She was a member of Olive Branch United Methodist Church was a retired clerk/secretary of Leggett Department Store.
Mrs. Vernon is survived by two sons, Owen S. Vernon and James A. Vernon, both of Alton, three grandchildren, Hally Ann Vernon, Jason N. Vernon and Kevin Vernon Harris and a sister, Theodora W. King of Raleigh, NC. She was preceded in death by her husband, Trogle Alvin Vernon and her parents, James Williamson and Ora Lee Earp Williamson.
A graveside service for Mrs. Vernon will be conducted today, Monday, December 22 at 2 p.m. at Calvary United Methodist Church cemetery with the Rev. Bob Huffman officiating. Mary Plenty Jennings
Mrs. Mary Plenty Jennings of Alexandria, formerly of Halifax, died Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at the age of 62. Born in Halifax County on August 25, 1946 to the late Mr. David Young Plenty and Mrs. Ruth Palmer Plenty, she was married to Mr. James E. Jennings. She was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Alexandria, and formerly a member of Banister Hill Baptist Church in Halifax.
Mrs. Jennings is survived by her husband, a daughter, Mrs. Yolanda Jennings-Sanders and husband, Russell, a son, Mr. Anthony Jennings, two grandsons, Anthony M. Jennings and Dequan T. Jennings, her mother of Halifax, four sisters, Ms. Ruth E. Plenty of Halifax, Mrs. Lillie P. Ross and Ms. Annie B. Plenty, both of Richmond and Mrs. Shirley D. Wilkins of Alexandria, three brothers, Mr. David Y. Plenty, Jr. of Woodbridge, Mr. Arthur Plenty of Alexandria and Mr. Albert Plenty of Baltimore, MD, four sisters-in-law, Mrs. Barbara Plenty of Woodbridge, Mrs. Rita Plenty of Alexandria, Mrs. Elaine Plenty of Baltimore, MD and Mrs. Brenda Sadler of Scottsburg and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A funeral service for Mrs. Jennings will be conducted on Tuesday, December 23 at 11 a.m. at Banister Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. William Carr officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Levi Barbour
Mr. Levi Barbour, 58, of Long Island died December 18, 2008 in South Boston. He was the son of the late Mr. Otis Barbour, Sr. and Mrs. Ella Barksdale Barbour and was married to Mrs. Nancy Tune Barbour.
Mr. Barbour is survived by his wife of Nathalie, two sons, Roddrick Barbour (Andrea) and Travis (BB) Barbour of Long Island, two grandchildren, one god grandchild, two sisters, Mrs. Betty Tune (James) and Ms. Sarah Barbour of nathalie, three brothers, Mr. Otis Barbour, Jr. Mr. Malcolm Barbour (Mattie) of Nathalie and Mr. Kitt Barbour (Drucilla) of Lanham, MD, his mother-in-law, Mrs. Vastine Tune, brothers-in-law, Mr. McArthur Tune and Mr. Riely Tune of Nathalie and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
A funeral service for Mr. Barbour will be held on Monday, December 22 at 1 p.m. at the Hickory Grove Baptist Church in Nathalie with the Rev. Thurman Betts officiating. William Jackson
Mr. William Lawrence "Billy" Jackson of 1135 Wilkerson Trail, Alton died Saturday, December 20, 2008 at his home. Born in Halifax County on May 15, 1930, he was 78 at the time of his death. He was a retired farmer and an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and was a member of Alton Baptist Church. Mr. Jackson is survived by his wife, Lois Bowen Jackson of the home, three daughters, Shirley J. Glasscock and husband, Eddie and Wanda J. Reaves and husband, Tony, all of South Boston and Brenda J. Throckmorton and husband, Jason of Mount Pleasant, SC and five grandchildren, Lewis M. Reaves and wife, Jennifer, Curtis W. Reaves and Barry L. Glasscock, all of South Boston, Emerson B. Throckmorton and Avery R. Throckmorton of Mount Pleasant, SC and a devoted friend, Charlie Paylor. He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin A. Jackson and Ora Mae Jackson.

James Alfred Landrum
Mr. James Alfred Landrum of 4200 Liberty Road, Nathalie died Friday, December 19, 200 at his home. Born in Halifax County on February 12, 1924, he was 84 at the time of his death. He was the son of the late Willie Landrum and Fannie Hudson Landrum and was married to Frances Moore Landrum, who survives. Mr. Landrum was a member of the Liberty United Church of Christ and an Army Air Force veteran.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Landrum is survived by two daughters, Sue Hardie Crump of Danville, Beth Landrum Saxton and husband, Brad of Richmond, two grandchildren, Sandy Crump Turnage of Williamsburg and Mary Beth Farley of Richmond, one great grandson, Jackson Robin Turnage of Williamsburg, one niece, Mary Frances West of Nathalie, one nephew, Glen Ragsdale of Nathalie and caregivers, Norma Chandler and Bernice Powell.
A graveside service for Mr. Landrum was held on Sunday, December 21 at 2 p.m. at Liberty United Church of Christ with the Rev. Dwight Moore officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Doris Irene W. Landes
Mrs. Doris Irene Wilkerson Landes of 1082 Cluster Ridge Trail, South Boston died Saturday, December 20, 2008 at her home. Born in Halifax County on December 12, 1927, she was 81 at the time of her death. She was a homemaker and a member of Second Baptist Church and Women of Hope.
Mrs. Landes is survived by her husband, Ralph Hall Landes of the home, three daughters, Marilyn L. Bowen and husband, Dwight of Virgilina, Barbara L. Clienhans of South Boston and Linda L. Hackney of Halifax, seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters, Gertrude W. Martin of Halifax, Virginia W. Long of South Boston and Mildred W. Reese of Richmond. She was preceded in death by a son, Ralph Hall Landes, Jr., her parents, Jimmie Lee Wilkerson and Emma Chandler Wilkerson and a sister, Nell W. Wilborn.

Cleo Snead Noblin
Mrs. Cleo Snead Noblin ÒMiss CleoÓ of 5219 Mt. Laurel Road, Clover, died Thursday, December 18, 2008 at her home. Born October 3, 1919 in Halifax County, she was 89 at the time of her death. She was a member of Clover United Methodist Church and was a homemaker and a retired clerk at the Clover Drug Store and at Roses.
She is survived by a devoted daughter, Donna N. Bunn of Clover, a sister Patsye S. Wilburn of Richmond, nephews, Douglas, David and Darryl Wilburn, a great niece and a great nephew, a lifelong friend, Mildred Rickman and a number of special friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie T. Noblin and her parents, Bennie David Snead and Annie Salmon Snead. She was loved by many extended friends and family.
A funeral service for Miss Cleo was held on Sunday, December 21 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Bonnie Pizzeck officiating. Burial followed in the Mt. Laurel United Methodist Church cemetery. Mr. James Anderson Black of 1046 Peartree Lane, Nathalie died Friday, December 19, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 65. Born in Halifax County on December 27, 1942 to the late Mr. Bossie Black and Mrs. Mozelle Boyd Black, he was married to Mrs. Ernestine Hancock Black and was a member of Second Buffalo Baptist Church.
Mr. Black is survived by his wife of the home, seven daughters, Ms. Jacqueline Black, Ms. Erica Black and Mrs. Regina Wooten, all of Washington, DC, Ms. Tyanda Stovall, Ms. Latanya Stovall and Ms. Trinity Stovall, all of Texas and Ms. Wendy Poindexter of South Boston, five sons, Mr. Eddie Black of Columbus, GA, Mr. Daniel Black of Lanham, MD and Mr. Eric Black of Brookneal, Mr. Timothy Stovall of Texas and Mr. Ricky Reed of Altavista, two sisters, Ms. Gazelle Black of Oxon Hill, MD and Mrs. Nancy Canada of Brookneal, two brothers, Mr. Earnest Black of Lynchburg and Mr. McKenny Jordan of Altavista, two aunts, Mrs. Anniem Boyd and Mrs. Sally Boyd, both of Nathalie, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Melville Ray Snoddy
Mr. Melville Ray Snoddy of 1119 Hitesburg Church Road, Virgilina died Sunday, December 21, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Born in Richmond on July 9, 1926, he was 82 at the time of his death. Mr. Snoddy was a farmer and was self-employed and was of the Baptist faith.
Mr. Snoddy is survived by his wife, Emma Jane Hart Snoddy of Virgilina, three sons, Larry Robert Snoddy and wife, Veronica and Barney Lee Snoddy and wife, Jane, all of Virgilina and Cecil Ray Snoddy of Nelson, a granddaughter, Lori Lynn Williamson and husband, Jason, two step grandsons, Christopher Crouch and Timothy Crouch and a step granddaughter, Destiny Cameron and a great grandchild, Madison Williamson. He was preceded in death by a son, Lindy Winston Snoddy and his parents, William Snoddy and Marien Overby Bowen and his step father, Clarence Bowen.
A graveside service for Mr. Snoddy will be conducted on Tuesday, December 23 at 2 p.m. at the Virgilina cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home, 1119 Hitesburg Church Road, Virgilina.
