Gladys Ruby Alladice Greene
Mrs. Gladys Ruby Alladice Greene, 71, of 1103 Neals Corner Road, Clover died Sunday, December 14, 2008 at her home. She was born in Harlem, NY on November 16, 1937, a daughter of the late Mr. Charles Alladice and Mrs. Mary Adella Alladice. She was married to Mr. Theodore "Pat" Greene and was a member of Bethel Grove Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son, Mr. Gary T. Greene of Fairfax; one daughter, Mrs. Gayle G. Winston of Macon, GA; three sisters, Mrs. Gloria Duckett of Bronx, NY, Mrs. Mavis Edgehill of New York City, NY and Mrs. Muriel Moore of Yorktown; one brother, Mr. Eric Alladice of Yorktown; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Gail Greene; one son-in-law, Mr. Steve Winston; two brothers-in-law, six sisters-in-law, other relatives and friends, including a close friend, Mrs. Jacqueline Greene. She was preceded in death by one sister, Ms. Laurel "Bonnie" Alladice.
Funeral services will be held Friday, December 19 at 2:00 p.m. at Bethel Grove Baptist Church with Rev. William Hicks officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Lawrence P. Smith Jr.
Mr. Lawrence Preston Smith, Jr., 61, of 1309 Bayonne Avenue, South Boston died Monday, December 15, 2008 at Duke University Medical Center. He was born in Halifax County on October 12, 1947, a son of the late Lawrence Preston Smith and Ida Neal Smith and was married to Pamela Rackley Smith. He was a member of First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon; was a member of Halifax County Rescue Squad from 1977 until his death, where he served as treasurer and president since 1995; lifetime member of South Boston Fire Department and former president of the South Boston Jaycees; and was owner of Smith Automotive, South Boston.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Lawrence Preston "Lawson" Smith, III and wife Andrea of South Boston and Ryan Walker Smith and wife Sara of Alexandria; and one sister, Joanne Farley of Fredericksburg, along with a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held today at 1:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. William Pyle and Rev. Susan Davis officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery. Annie Younger Barksdale
Mrs. Annie Younger Barksdale, 81, of 1070 Union Grove Road, South Boston died Friday, December 12, 2008 in Danville. She was born in Halifax County on September 9, 1927, a daughter of the late Mr. Stanford Crews and Mrs. Louise Hendricks Younger. She was married to the late Mr. Ocie Barksdale and was a member of Millstone Baptist Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Ms. Joyce Mitchell of South Boston and Mrs. Bonnie Irby of Danville; five sons, Mr. Wayne Hayes of Philadelphia, PA, Mr. James L. Barksdale of Greensboro, NC, Mr. Calvin Barksdale of South Boston, Mr. Jerry Barksdale of Greensboro, NC and Mr. Ricky Barksdale of South Boston; 20 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Marie Hubbard of Washington, DC; one aunt, Mrs. Jearlean Poindexter; three daughters-in-law, Mrs. Cheryl Barksdale, Mrs. May Younger and Mrs. Amanda Barksdale; one son-in-law, Mr. Ira Day; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Nannie Rose Hamlett; one step-brother, Mr. Benjamin Hendricks; devoted friends, Mrs. Vivian Clark, Mrs. Alma Sommerville, Mr. and Mrs. Rogers L. Hart, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at Millstone Baptist Church with Rev. Clarence Hairston, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Orange Jennings
Mr. Orange Jennings, 90, of Nathalie died Tuesday, December 16, 2008 in South Boston. He was born in Halifax County, a son of the late Mr. Garther Jennings and Mrs. Rebecca Jackson Jennings.
He is survived by three daughters, Sylvia Garner, Wanda Brown (Antori), both of Nathalie and Pauline Foster (Russell) of Richmond; four sons, James O. Jennings (Louvener), Mitchell Jennings (Yvonne), Elvin L. Jennings (Sharon), all of Nathalie and Roderick Jennings of Winston-Salem, NC; 17 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Gracie Mitchell of Roanoke and Emma Buster of Nathalie; one brother, Lacy Jennings of Nathalie; one daughter-in-law, Betty Jennings, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Friday, December 19 at 2:00 p.m. at New Shiloh Baptist Church with Rev. Antori Brown officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Olan "Curly" Chancellor
Mr. Olan "Curly" Chancellor, 82, of 1065 Daniel Trail, Halifax died Monday, December 15, 2008 at his home. He was born in Montgomery, Alabama on July 28, 1926, a son of the late Henry Franklin Chancellor and Roxie Turman Chancellor and was married to the late Elizabeth C. Chancellor.
He is survived by one daughter, Teresa Chancellor Smith of Staunton; one step-daughter, Joann T. Powell of Halifax; one step-son, Dean Throckmorton of Scottsburg; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at Halifax Memorial Gardens with Rev. W.D. "Dib" Mills officiating. The family will receive friends at the home.
James Kelso Crawley
Mr. James Kelso Crawley died Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at Washington Hospital Center, Washington, DC. He was born in Halifax County on January 5, 1941, son of the late Mr. Walter W. Crawley and Mrs. Maggie B. Crawley. He was a member of Walker Memorial Baptist Church and former member of Dan River Bethel Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Sarah Chandler Crawley; his son, Mr. Emerson Crawley; his granddaughter, Ms. Chardonnay Crawley; four sisters, Mrs. Anna Wilkins, Mrs. Ida Robertson, Mrs. Dora Mason and Ms. W. Marie Crawley; five brothers, Mr. Walter Crawley, Mr. John Crawley, Rev. Allen Crawley, Mr. Joseph Crawley and Mr. Charlie Crawley; seven sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law, one aunt, Mrs. Estelle Watkins, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Ricardo Crawley.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 19 at 11 a.m. at Walker Memorial Baptist Church, Washington, DC with Pastor Turham L. Potter officiating.
Dennis Tucker
Mr. Dennis Tucker, 45, of 3202 Lead Road, Nathalie died Saturday, December 13, 2008. He was born September 3, 1963, a son of Mrs. Geneva Wooding Tucker and the late Mr. Jimmie Lee Tucker and was married to Mrs. Teresa Easley Tucker. Dennis was a member of Mt. Airy Baptist Church, was a United States Army Veteran and an employee at Halifax Regional Hospital.
In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by three daughters, Miss Ashley McKayla Tucker and Miss Briana Nicole Tucker, of the home, and Miss Armisha L. Tucker of South Boston; two grandsons; two sisters, Mrs. Rosa T. Dixon of Nathalie and Ms. Sylvia Tucker of Halifax; two brothers, Mr. Jimmie Rogers Tucker of Halifax and Mr. Sonny Lee Tucker of Newburg, NY; seven aunts, six uncles; his mother-in-law, Mrs. Lillian Thornton Easley of Nathalie; nine sisters-in-law, four brothers-in-law, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 20 at 1:00 p.m. at New Zion Baptist Church with Rev. Willie N. Yancey officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Military Rites by American Legion Post 99. After 10:00 a.m. on Friday, the remains will lie in-state at Crawford House Chapel, Halifax where the family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m.
