Mary Stevens Barnes

Mrs. Mary Stevens Barnes of Halifax died Sunday, December 14, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Born November 11, 1915 in Halifax County she was 93 at the time of her death. She was the daughter of the late T. E. Stevens and the late Nora Price Stevens and was married to the late Samuel H. Barnes. She was a member of the Winns Creek Baptist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher for many years. She was retired from the FBI in Washington, DC and was the former president of the Woman's Missionary Mission Society at Winns Creek Baptist Church and was also a member of the UDC.
Mrs. Barnes is survived by one daughter, Mary E. Barnes Magnotto and husband Ricco Magnotto of Halifax, a sister, Gladys S. Dodson of Halifax, and a brother, Archer T. Stevens of South Carolina, and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Hilda S. Power and Reba J. Stevens and three brothers, John B., Robert W. and C. Melvin Stevens.
A funeral service for Mrs. Barnes will be conducted on Tuesday, December 16 at 2 p.m. at Winns Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim Kopco and the Rev. Tim Madison conducting the service. Burial will follow in the Barnes Family Cemetery in Barnesville. The family will receive friends Monday, December 15 from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home and at other times at her home, 3228 Howard P. Anderson Highway, Halifax. Mollie Theo W. Puryear

Mrs. Mollie Theo Wilkerson Puryear of 1506 Moore Street, South Boston died Friday, December 12, 2008 at her home. Born in Roxboro, N.C. on April 25, 1915, she was 93 at the time of her death. A homemaker, she was a member of Black Walnut Baptist Church. Mrs. Puryear is survived by two sons, Jerry Puryear and wife, Clara and Ronnie Puryear and wife, Vivian, all of South Boston, three grandsons, Kurt Puryear, Stacy Puryear and Eric Puryear and five granddaughters, Kim Harris, Karen Carlson, Tina McDowell, Robin Collins and Sherri Cole, 12 great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Alice Hamilton and Jennie Davis, both of Durham, N.C. and two brothers, Wallace Wilkerson of Dunn, N.C. and W. T. Wilkerson of White Lake, N.C., She was preceded in death by her husband, John Robert Puryear, her parents, Nannie Lue Strum Wilkerson and Walter Thomas Wilkerson, a daughter, Marie Chafin, two sons, Lawrence and Robert Mitchell Puryear, three sisters, Etta Perkins, Gertie Moody and Gladys Puryear and three brothers, James, Alton and Beatron Wilkerson.

Harry Tinnell Smith

Mr. Harry Tinnell Smith of 1180 German Creek Road, South Boston died Friday, December 12, 2008 at his home. Born in Halifax County on April 4, 1938, he was 70 at the time of his death. He was a truck driver with the Virginia Department of Transportation and a member of Ephesus Baptist Church.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Mary Wilborn Smith of the home, a son Kevin R. Smith and wife Angela of Petersburg, a step son, Chuck Overby of South Boston, a step daughter, Melinda Davis of Roxboro, NC, a sister, Myrtle S. Link of South Boston, a grandson, Kevin "KJ" Smith, Jr., a granddaughter, Faith A. Smith, a step grandddaughter, Victoria D. Rimmer and a step grandson, Taylor Davis. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Duffer Smith, his parents, Jessie T. and Ida Trickey Smith and a step grandson, Austin Rimmer, two sisters and three brothers.
A funeral service for Mr. Smith will be conducted Monday, December 15 at 1 p.m. at Ephesus Baptist Church with the Rev. L. L. Watlington and Wayne Shotwell officiating. Steve Mitchell Campbell

Mr. Steve Mitchell Campbell, 37, of 2177 Mountain Road, Halifax died Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at VCU. He was born in Halifax County on December 25, 1970, a son of Donald Ray Campbell and Rose Marie Clay Curry and was married to Lisa Marie Campbell.
In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by three sons, Vincent Ray Campbell and Christopher Allen Campbell, both of Halifax and Devin Tyler Lloyd of Alton; one daughter, Gabrielle Nelson of Madison Heights; two sisters, Donna Campbell Davis of Halifax and Jacquelynn Campbell Hart of Bullock, N.C. and two brothers, William Dement of Franklinton, N.C. and Dwayne Martin of South Boston.
Graveside services were held Saturday, December 13 at 2:00 p.m. at Fork Baptist Church Cemetery, Dryburg.


Lewis Pevin Boxley

Mr. Lewis Pevin Boxley of 1284 Leasburg Road, Roxboro, N.C. died Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at Person Memorial Hospital at the age of 73. Born in Halifax County on September 4, 1935 to the late Mr. Jessie Boxley and Mrs. Emma Lester Boxley, he was a member of Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church.
Mr. Boxley is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Iris A. Leis of Alexandria, a stepson, Mr. William Boxley of Alton, two grandchildren, Mary Boxley and Jessica Boxley, both of Alexandria, four sisters, Ms. Lorraine Wade of Roxboro, N.C., Mrs. Annie Terry of Virgilina, Ms. Hilda Coley of East Orange, N.J. and Mrs. Tressie Murray of Bishopville, S.C., a brother, Deacon Jessie Boxley of South Boston, a brother-in-law, Mr. Jimmie Terry of Virgilina, a sister-in-law, Mrs. Fay Boxley of South Boston and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends including a special friend, Mr. Eddie Adams. In addition to his parents, Mr. Boxley was preceded in death by one brother, Mr. Felton Murray and a sister, Mary White.
A funeral service for Mr. Boxley will be held on Monday, December 15 at 1 p.m. at Blue Wing Baptist Church with Rev. Donald Leath officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Family and friends will be received at the home of Deacon Jessie and Fay Boxley, 1018 Greens Folly Road, South Boston.

Elizabeth Terry Hunnicutt

Mrs. Elizabeth Terry Hunnicutt of Nathalie went home to be with the Lord Saturday, December 13, 2008 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke. Born in Halifax County on April 27, 1911, she was 97 years old and was the daughter of the late Samuel Terry and the late Ava Terry and was married to the late Ben Hunnicutt. She was a member of Mulberry Baptist Church.
Mrs. Hunnicutt is survived by a son, Marvin Hunnicutt and wife, Mary of Ringgold, one sister, Ava Martin and husband Charlie of Rustburg, three grandchildren and one great grandchild.
A funeral service for Mrs. Hunnicutt will be conducted on Wednesday, December 17 at 2 p.m. at the Mulberry Baptist Church with the Rev. Latta Terry, the Rev. Bill Blalock and the Rev. Coy Terry officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday, December 16 from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home and at other times at the home of her son, 2637 Sandy Creek Church Road, Ringgold. Ellen Bertha Rogers

Mrs. Ellen Bertha Rogers, 91, of Bronx, N.Y., formerly of Nathalie, died Friday, December 5, 2008 at Morningside Nursing Home. She was born September 7, 1917 in Nathalie, a daughter of the late Woodrow and Ellen Clark and was a member of Sunflower Baptist Church.
She is survived by her grandsons, Joseph Scruggs and wife Patricia and Jason Terry; her son-in-law, James Terry; four great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 13 at 10:00 a.m. at Sunflower Baptist Church with Rev. Lorenzo Ruff officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Willie (Sue) Smith Noell

Mrs. Willie (Sue) Smith Noell of 11140 Philpott Road, Alton died Thursday, December 11, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 71. Born in Halifax County on June 30, 1937 to the late Mr. Irving Smith and Mrs. Lelia Oliver Smith, she was a member of Crossroad Baptist Church.
Mrs. Noell is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Jacky Hemphill of Silver Spring, Md. and Ms. Evelyn (Niecy) Noell of Oxford, N.C., three sons, Mr. Calvin Smith and Mr. Timothy Noell, both of Alton and Mr. Barry Noell of Greenbelt, Md., seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
A funeral service for Mrs. Noell will be held on Monday, December 15 at 2:30 p.m. at Crossroad Baptist Church with the Rev. Dennis White officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Family and friends will be received at 1134 Richardson Lane, Alton.
