OBITUARIES
Watkins Fulp
Mr. Watkins Fulp of 2044 Solomon Road, South Boston died Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Born in Halifax County on August 4, 1932, he was 76 at the time of his death. He was the son of the late Charles Thomas Fulp and Gertrude Roberts Fulp and was married to Frances Moorefield Fulp, who survives. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of South Boston and the No Dog Hunting Club.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Fulp is survived by a daughter Susan F. Belcher and fiancé Ronnie Graham of Danville, two sons, Joel Watkins Fulp of South Boston and fiancée Kim Harris of Virginia Beach and Charles Thomas Fulp of Danville, three grandchildren, Leah Belcher of Danville and Joe Watkins Fulp II and Laura Katherine Fulp of Chase City. Also surviving are three sisters, Louise F. Dodd of Loudon, Tenn., Frances F. Taylor of Richmond and Gertrude F. Reese of Loganville, Ga. and on brother, Ralph Fulp of Palacious, Texas. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert, Earl and Douglas Fulp.
A graveside service for Mr. Fulp will be conducted on Friday, December 5 at 2 p.m. at Oak Ridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday, December 4 from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home and at times at his home. William Abdo Smiley
Mr. William Abdo Smiley of 2408 Margaret Drive, Newport Beach, CA died Tuesday, November 25, 2008. Born in West Virginia on September 21, 1923, he was 85 at the time of his death. He was a self employed realtor and CPA and was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Mullins, West Virginia.
Mr. Smiley is survived by his wife, Celia Senkowski Smiley of the home, two daughters, Karen S. Hicks of New Berlin, PA and Roseann L. Smiley of Austin, Texas and one son, William C. Smiley of Newport Beach, Calif. and one grandson, Dorian Smiley of Costa Rica. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Abdo Smiley and Elizabeth Comer Smiley.
A funeral service for Mr. Smiley will be conducted at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, December 6 at noon. with the Rev. Jack Stewart officiating. Burial will follow in Grace Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Brooks Funeral Home on Saturday, December 6 from 11 a.m. to noon.
Dave Logan Hodge
Mr. Dave Logan Hodge, 53, of 15123 Mountain Road, South Boston died Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was born on May 15, 1955, in Danville, a son of Della Logan Hodge of South Boston and the late James Edmond Hodge.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by two sons, James E. Hodge and Dave L. Hodge, Jr. both of Burkeville; one grandchild, Damian James Hodge; two brothers, Barry G. Hodge and his wife Brenda of Vernon Hill and Gary W. Hodge and his wife Jean of South Boston; five nieces and two nephews and a special friend, Judy Hodge. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Harold P. Logan and Mildred S. Logan
Graveside services will be conducted at Highland Burial Park on Friday, December 5 at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Carl Burger officiating. The family will receive friends at Scott Funeral Home today from 7:00-8:00 p.m. and other times at his home.
Jerry Winston Marable
Mr. Jerry Winston Marable, 55, of 1029 Sandy Creek Road, Ringgold on Monday, December 1 at his home. He was born in Halifax County on August 7, 1953, a son of Mrs. Edith Williams Marable and the late Mr. Luke Marable, Sr. and was a member of New Arbor Baptist Church.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by three daughters, Ms. Calethea Marable of Hartford, Conn., Ms. Kelly Marable and Ms. Wendy Marable, both of Danville; five grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Edith Diane Tennant of Hartford, Mrs. Althea Williams of South Boston and Mrs. Agnes Washington of Sutherlin; one brother, Mr. Luke Marable Jr. of South Boston; three brothers-in-law, one sister-in-law, two uncles, seven aunts, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held today at 1:00 p.m. at New Arbor Baptist Church with Rev. Nelson Stamps officiating. Burial will follow in the Marable Family Cemetery.
William Taylor McSherry
MILTON - William Taylor McSherry, 79, of 11855 Academy St., died Sunday, November 30, 2008 at his home. Born in Person County, he was the son of the late Clyde William and Thelma Taylor McSherry. Mr. McSherry served in the U.S. Army from September 11, 1953, to September 2, 1955, having been station in Okinawa, Japan. He retired from A & P Groceries and Midtown Market. He also retired from the Caswell County ABC Board, served on the Milton Town Council and the Milton Volunteer Fire Department and was a member of Lebanon Christian Church where he was a deacon.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Whitlock McSherry; two daughters, Julie Taylor McSherry of Milton and Virginia M. Foster and husband, Dr. Andy Foster of Providence; two grandchildren, Katherine Taylor Foster and James Andrew Foster II; one sister, Nancy M. Henderson, of Alton. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Clyde Owen McSherry and Rudy McSherry.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at Lebanon Christian Church by the Rev. Harold E. Thompson Jr. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
