Doris Elizabeth Powers
Doris Elizabeth Powers was born October 18, 1937 in Chase City and died at her home November 25, 2008. She was survived by two daughters, Deborah Hall of Virgilina and Martha Stearns of Richmond; five granddaughters, 17 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson; two brothers, William Weaver and Clifford Weaver; two sisters, Joyce Henderson of Richmond and Nancy Baggett of Chesapeake, other relatives and friends, including Gus, Gladys, Katie and Dorothy. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clifford and Leila Weaver and her grandson, James William Hall III.
Memorial services were held Sunday, November 30 in the family room of Phase I Rosehill Apartments by Rev. Randy Holmes officiating. Memorials may be directed to Halifax County Cancer Association, P.O. Box 875, South Boston, VA 24592.
Lanier Powell Canada
Mrs. Lanier Powell Canada of East Hyco Road, South Boston died Saturday, November 29, 2008 at The Woodview nursing home at the age of 88. Born in Halifax County on April 26, 1920, Mrs. Canada was the daughter of the late George C. and Eva Bliss Powell. She was married to the late Louis H. Canada and was a homemaker and a member of Revelation Baptist Church.
Mrs. Canada is survived by a daughter, Elna C. Rudder of Halifax; four sons, Timmy Canada, Kenneth Canada and his wife Susan of South Boston, Michael Canada and his wife Cathy of South Boston, and Dan Canada and his wife Diane of Martinsville,; five sisters, Dorothy P. Lacks and Elsie P. Owen, both of Halifax, Margaret P. Canada of South Boston, and Lillian P. Smith and Mary Lee P. Smith, both of Scottsburg; one brother, Calvin "Runt" Powell of South Boston; and eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Services for Mrs. Canada will be held at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel on Monday, December 1 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. William Coghill presiding. Visitation will be held at the funeral home chapel from 1-2 p.m. Monday. Those wishing to give memorials are asked to consider Halifax Regional Hospice, 2204 Wilborn Avenue, South Boston VA 24592.
Etta Jane M. Tillotson
BULLOCK, N.C. — Etta Jane Matthews Tillotson died Friday, November 28, 2008 at WakeMed Raleigh after months of declining health. She was a native of Granville County, born to Ethel and Thomas Matthews on November 26, 1934. Mrs. Tillotson retired from Russell Stover Candies in 2001 and continued to care devotedly for her husband C.S. Tillotson Jr. until his death in 2004. She was an active member of Rock Spring Baptist Church and always a woman of great faith.
Throughout her life, Mrs. Tillotson most enjoyed time spent with family, including short trips with her daughters to interesting sites, with stops at thrift stores along any route. She loved hunting with her husband and son and was an excellent shot. Her delicious meals and common sense counsel were shared with family and friends of every age who spent contented hours around her kitchen table, under trees in the side yard, and at church events.
Mrs. Tillotson is survived by her children: Vickie Poole and her husband, Doug; Chuck Tillotson and his wife Angie; and Susan Tillotson and her life partner Rose Auman. She was predeceased by her parents, husband and two young daughters, Marjorie Ellen and Brenda Gail Tillotson, in addition to siblings Belle Fox and Margaret Robinette. Her light shines though seven grandchildren: Karen Schmidt, Kevin Poole, Breidi Caparatta, Tammy and Brianne Tillotson, and Jay and Kristy Long. She was also adored by five great-grandchildren: Torre Caparatta, Aiden and Dylan Coleman, Jackson Poole, and Gracie Long. Siblings who survive are Faucette Matthews of Henderson, Kathleen Critcher of Oxford, Babe Ruth Matthews of Bullock, and Cilla Matthew-Fox of Conover.
Visitation was held in the fellowship hall of Rock Spring Baptist Church, 171 Rock Spring Church Road, Henderson, NC 27537 at 1:00 PM on Sunday, November 30, followed by a funeral service at 2 PM. Burial followed in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mrs. Tillotson's memory to Rock Spring Baptist Church, P.O. Box 96, Townsville, NC 27584. Jewell Whitlow Foldesi
Mrs. Jewell Whitlow Foldesi, 67, of Chesterfield died Thursday, November 27, 2008 at her home. She was born in Halifax County on January 10, 1941, daughter of the late Thomas Radford Whitlow and Bessie Stevens Whitlow. She was married to Wayne Lee Foldesi and was a member of Chesterfield Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Brian Joseph Foldesi and wife Donna of Chesterfield and Thomas Jerome Foldesi and fiance Amy Crouter of Fayetteville, N.C.; one daughter, Michelle F. Brown and husband Charles "Jay" of Colonial Heights; three grandchildren, Shawn Drudge and wife Amanda, Amber Marie Brown and Charles "Joshua" Brown; one brother, Hugh David Whitlow of Richmond.
Funeral services were held Sunday, November 30 at Mount Vernon Baptist Church with Rev. Bill Wilkins officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Lola Tatum Brooks
Lola Tatum Brooks, 86, of Richmond, formerly of Scottsburg, died November 23, 2008 at Chippenham Medical Center. She is survived by two sons and one sister, James "Buck" Tatum and wife Marie of Scottsburg, Norman W. Tatum and wife Carol of Richmond and Bernice C. Grant of Richmond; eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Friday, November 28 at Bethel Baptist Church with Pastor Bob Rudman and Pastor Dr. Bruce Hagy officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
