Sarah Wade Owen

Miss Sarah Wade Owen of South Boston died Thursday, November 20 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
She was born in South Boston on November 18, 1921 and was 87 years of age. She was the daughter of the late Richard and Sarah Wade Owen. Miss Owen taught school for 42 years in the Richmond area and in the Newport News school system. She was a Guidance Director for Newport News High School, Treasurer of Newport News Education Association, a former Vice President of the Alpha Chapter, Iota State of Delta Kappa Gamma Society, a volunteer at the South Boston-Halifax County Museum and a tireless worker in her church.
Miss Owen is survived by a brother, Richard Owen, Jr. and wife Ann of Alpharetta, Ga. and a sister, Bertha Jane Dunavant and husband Jack of Halifax. She was preceded in death by a sister, Sue Owen Dutrow and husband David A. Dutrow. Also surviving are nieces, Mary Dutrow Emerson and husband Frank, Virginia Dutrow Allsopp and husband David, Sarah Dunavant Epps and husband Otis, Joy Dunavant Abel and husband David. Surviving nephews are David Dutrow Jr., Jack Dunavant III, Richard Dunavant and wife Julie and 10 grand-nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Sunday, November 23 at Main Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Edward Rigg officiating. Burial followed in Oak Ridge Cemetery. Walter Hubert Powell

Mr. Walter Hubert Powell, 81, of 7238 Melon Road, Sutherlin died Friday, November 21, 2008 at his home. He was born in Person County, N.C. on August 16, 1927, son of the late William Lockett Powell and Mabel Clayton Powell and was married to Doris Fuqua Powell. He was a member of Mercy Seat Presbyterian Church, where he was a former elder and choir member.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Grey Arrington and husband Reggie of Buffalo Junction, Karen Davis and husband Terry of Timberlake, N.C. and Penny Powell of Sutherlin; five grandchildren, Charles Thompson, B.J. Reaves, Zachary Reaves, Anna Moore, Michaela Moore; two brothers, Lemuel Powell of Sutherlin and George Powell of Roxboro, N.C.; six sisters, Alma Gunter of Roxboro, N.C., Mildred Reid of Oklahoma, Jessie Mae Piner of Roxboro, N.C., Bettie Smith of Mebane, N.C., Carrie Lee Shotwell of Roxboro, N.C., Faye Pope of Cedar Grove, N.C. and other extended family Mr. and Mrs. George Wooding, Elizabeth, Jacob and Reese, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Rice, Billie and Taylor, Mrs. Dean Payne and Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Payne. He was preceded in death by one sister, Clara Ashley and two brothers, Bobby Powell and Samuel Powell.
Funeral services were held Sunday, November 23 at Mercy Seat Presbyterian Church with Rev. Ed Melvin and Rev. Jeaux Simmons officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Halifax Regional Hospice, 2204 Wilborn Avenue, South Boston, VA 24592.

Junior David Walker

Mr. Junior David "J.D." Walker of 1175 Alchie Lane, Nathalie died Saturday, November 22, 2008 at his home. Born May 16, 2008 in Person County, NC, he was 81 at the time of his death. He was the son of the late David Wyatt Walker and Lona P. Hawkins Walker and was married to Clarice Arendall Walker. He was a retired farmer and a member of Crystal Hill Southern Baptist Church.
Mr. Walker is survived by his wife, Clarice A. Walker of the home, three brothers, Ralph M. Walker of Halifax, Wayne Walker of South Boston and Edmond Walker of Yanceyville, NC and one sister, Helen W. Bomar of Nathalie and a stepson Kenneth D. Walker of South Boston and four step daughters, Janet W. Francis of Vernon Hill, Kathy W. Francis of Virgilina, Donna W. Perkins of Russel Springs, Ky. and Glynis Walker of Lynchburg, five step granddaughters, one special grandson, Quincy Francis and six step great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Richard Walker and four sisters, Mildred Bowes, Mary Bell Bowes, Myrtle Pruitt and Martha Wrenn.
A graveside service will be conducted Monday, November 24 a 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Millstone Cemetery with the Rev. Bob Watts officiating. For memorials, please consider the Gideons International or the First Baptist Church of Millstone.

Lemuel Walker Womack

Mr. Lemuel Walker "Tiny" Womack, 64, of South Boston died Friday, November 21, 2008 at The Woodview. He was born in Halifax County on August 21, 1944, a son of Catherine White Womack and the late Charlie W. Womack. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by three brothers, Garnett M. Womack and wife Linda of Manassas, C.J. and wife Betty of Halifax, Earnest Lee and Cathy of Vernon Hill; special friend, Jane Dorsey of South Boston and a number of nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held Sunday, November 23 at Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. Bob Rudman and Rev. Dr. Melvin Bradshaw officiating. Memorials may be directed to the Halifax County Cancer Association, P.O. Box 875, South Boston, VA 24592.
