OBITUARIES
Bonnie Yates Reese
Bonnie Yates Reese, 45, of Chesterfield, passed away on November 16, 2008. She was born in South Boston, the daughter of the late Lucias and Barbara Yancey Ray.
She is survived by her loving husband, Martin “Marty” Reese of Chesterfield; step-children, Shannon Locklear and husband, Jason and Joey Reese, all of Jacksonville, N.C.; a brother, Danny Ray and wife, Deborah of Mechanicsville; a nephew, Michael Ray and niece, Becky Ray. Bonnie was a former employee of S.I.L. Insurance Agency.
The family will receive friends at the Chesterfield Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home on Thursday, November 20 from 6-8 p.m. A second visitation will take place at the Powell Funeral Home on Saturday, November 22 from noon-1:00 p.m. with funeral services beginning at 1 p.m. Interment will follow in Halifax Memorial Gardens. Emily Scott Lacks
Mrs. Emily Scott Lacks of 1141 John Henry Brown Road, Clover died Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 99. Born in Halifax County on February 18, 1909 to the late Mr. Johnnie Scott and Mrs. Berta Britton Scott, she was married to the late Mr. Luther B. Lacks. She was a member of Zion Grove Baptist Church.
Mrs. Lacks is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Emily Ferguson of Fredericksburg, Mrs. Mary Greene, Ms. Irene Lacks and Mrs. Viola Elizabeth Bryant, all of Clover; six sons, Mr. George Lacks of New Haven, Conn., Mr. Mitchell Lacks of Texas, Mr. James Lacks and Mr. Luther Lacks, both of Brooklyn, N.Y., Mr. John Lacks and Mr. Lorenzo Lacks, both of Clover; a sister, Mrs. Hattie Nabors of Ossing, N.Y., 36 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, four sisters-in-law, two sons-in-law, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Sarah Faucette and two brothers, Mr. Bernard and Mr. McKinley Lacks.
A funeral service for Mrs. Lacks will be conducted on Sunday, November 23 at 2:30 p.m. at Zion Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Jefferson Goode officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Public viewing for family and friends will be on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the family will receive friends at the home, 1141 John Henry Brown Road, Clover.
Herbert ‘Wayne’ McBride
Herbert “Wayne” McBride of 3001 Beulah Road, Nathalie peacefully passed away on Sunday, November 16 in his home surrounded by his family. Wayne was born April 10, 1939 in Halifax County and was 69 years young. He was the son of the late Herbert O. and Carrie McBride and the husband to Jane G. McBride, who survives.
Surviving family includes brothers, Marvin and Charlotte McBride of Lynchburg and Steve and Jill McBride of Danville; his children, Carol Younger of Myrtle Beach, SC, Gwendolyn and Keith Yow of Seagrove, NC, Mark McBride of Nathalie, David and Angel McBride of Troy, N.C., Matthew “Jason” and Sara McBride of Halifax, Adam and Abby McBride of Nathalie and Josh and Randi McBride of Vernon Hill, ten grandchildren, 8 1/2 great-grandchildren and a very large extended family.
Services were held on Monday, November 17 at 2:00 p.m. Wayne was laid to rest on the family farm.

Alonzo Coleman
Alonzo Coleman, 79, of Nathalie died November 14, 2008 in South Boston. He was the son of the late Mr. Sam Coleman and Mrs. Mary Coleman and was married to Mrs. Christine Coleman and was a member of Ellis Creek Missionary Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Alonzo Coleman (Annette) of Chesapeake and Charles Coleman (Wanda) of Raleigh, N.C.; three daughters, Mary C. Betts (Charlie) of South Boston, Marcia L. Richmond (Tommy) of Roxboro, N.C. and LaTonda D.M. Yancey (Robert) of Richmond; four stepchildren, Sherman Jennings (Phyliss) of Nathalie, Paul Jennings (Dianne) of Gretna, Luke Brown (Wendy) of Halifax and Verlie Brown (Brian) of Baltimore, Md.; 13 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 19 at Ellis Creek Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Bruce Featherston officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Thomas Jack Griffin
Mr. Thomas Jack Griffin, 89, of Danville, formerly of South Boston, died Monday, November 17, 2008 at Danville Regional Hospital. He was born in Wake County, NC, a son of the late Henry May Griffin and Minna Allen Griffin and was married to the late Maryalice Wright Griffin. He was a member of First Baptist Church of South Boston, where he was a deacon, a member and past president of South Boston Lions Club, on the Board of Directors of Danville Community College, a U.S. Army Air Corps Veteran of World War II and a former general manager of J.P. Stevens.
He is survived by one daughter, Theresa G. Barker of Semora, NC; one son, Thomas J. Griffin, Jr. of Jacksonville, AL; five grandchildren, Bryce “Chip” Barker, Jr., Catherine Barker, Benjamin Barker, Thomas Griffin, III and Frank Griffin and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church, South Boston with Rev. William Pyle officiating. Burial will follow in Halifax Memorial Gardens.

Josephine E. Claiborne
Mrs. Josephine Edmunds Claiborne, 88, of Poplar Creek Street, South Boston died November 15, 2008 at The Woodview. She was born in Halifax County on August 9, 1920, daughter of the late Mr. Isaiah Edmunds and Mrs. Lottie E. Edmunds. She was married to the late Mr. Jessie Wilson Claiborne, Sr. and was a member of Peaceful Tabernacle Baptist Church.
She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Nancy Green of Richmond and Ms. Ora Edmunds of South Boston; seven step-children, Mr. Jesse Claiborne, Jr. of San Antonio, Texas, Mrs. Mary Jackson of Nathalie, Mrs. Deloris Brown of Winston-Salem, N.C., Ms. Janice Claiborne of Melbourne, Fla., Mrs. Barbara Brame of Clinton, Md., Mr. Wayne Claiborne of Newport News, Mr. Charles Claiborne of Landover, Md.; one godchild, Ms. Shirine Hankins; one nephew, Mr. Johnny Edmunds; 13 step-grandchildren, 10 step-great-grandchildren; three step-sons-in-law, Mr. Willie Jackson, Mr. Larry Brown, Mr. Randy Brame; two step-daughters-in-law, Mrs. Gwendolyn Claiborne and Mrs. Brenda Claiborne; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Friday, November 21 at 2:00 p.m. at Peaceful Tabernacle Baptist Church with Rev. Jackie Stamps officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Randy Brame, Stanley Court, South Boston.
Barbara Anne Brett Sellers
Barbara Anne Brett Sellers, 79, of 1385 Ringgold Road, Ringgold died Monday, November 17, 2008. She was born September 13, 1929 in Portsmouth, to the late Herbert James Brett and Bessie Mae Boylan Brett.
She was first married to the late Woody Phelps and then to the late Hubert Cyril Sellers, Sr. She worked for C&P Telephone Company for 37 years. After retirement, she worked part-time as Secretary at Ringgold Baptist Church, where she was a member.
Three daughters and one son survive Mrs. Sellers. They are Gypsy L. Phelps, Bert and Mary Edna Sellers, Cyril Anne Sellers, and Ginger Sue Sellers. Survivors also include three grandchildren, Brett (Susan) Phelps, H.C. (Monica) Sellers III, and Peyton Sellers and four great-grandchildren, Cody Phelps, Macy Phelps, Brittany Sellers and Kristen Sellers. Her sister, Lamar Earp, formerly of South Boston, also survives her along with numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held Wednesday, November 19 at Ringgold Baptist Church. A private burial will be held at a later date.
