OBITUARIES
Victoria M. "Vickie" Dowdy
Mrs. Victoria Mozelle Ferguson "Vickie" Dowdy, formerly of South Boston, died Saturday, November 8, 2008 at Berry Hill Nursing Home. She was born in Amelia County on July 20, 1919 and was 89 at the time of her death. She was the daughter of the late George Cullen Ferguson and the late Mary Ethel Bryant Ferguson.
Mrs. Dowdy is survived by a son, Bobby Dowdy of Florida, three grandchildren, Robert and Donna Turkington of Nathalie, Candie Salach of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, two great grandchildren, Robbie Turkington and Manissa Bowen and twelve great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five brothers, George A., Harry B, John W. "Bill," Wesley J. and Ernest D. Fergsuon and six sisters, Bessie F. Vaughan, Minnie King, Kathleen F. Mitchem, Jettie Davis, Myrtle Haverson and Irene Coffee and her daughter, Loretta Faye Salach and George "Buddy" Dodson.
As her last wish there will be a graveside service at Mount Hermon Church of the Brethren in Bassett on Tuesday, November 11 at 2 p.m. with Pastor Naff officiating. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Virginia or the American Cancer Society.
Kathy Powell Smith
Ms. Kathy Powell Smith, 52, of Semora, NC, formerly of Halifax County, died Friday, November 7, 2008 at her home. She was born in Halifax County on September 12, 1956, a daughter of the late Clifton Eugene Powell, Sr. and Eleanor Rickmond Powell. She was a member of Fork Baptist Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Stephanie Smith Hudson of Alton and Stacy Renee Smith of Virgilina; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Glenda P. Smith of Chase City, Terry Powell Ingram of Halifax. She was preceded in death by one brother, Clifton Eugene Powell, Jr.
Graveside services were held Sunday, November 9 at Fork Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. David Rathel officiating.
Maggie Lorene Crews Hall
Mrs. Maggie Lorene Crews Hall, 88, of South Boston died Thursday, November 6, 2008 at The Woodview. She was born in Halifax County on December 21, 1919, a daughter of the late Richard S. Crews and Pocahontas Holt Crews and was married to the late Claiborne Cabell Hall, Sr.
She is survived by one son, Claiborne Cabell Hall, Jr. of South Boston; one brother, Warnie Holt Crews of Lynchburg; one daughter, Shirley Mae Wright; one sister, Elsie Elizabeth Miller and one brother, Jessie Edward Crews.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday, November 11 at 2:00 p.m. at Oak Ridge Cemetery with Rev. Don Bryant officiating. The family will receive friends at the home of her son, 4232 River Road, South Boston.
Shirley "Dick" Rickmond
Mr. Shirley Marvin "Dick" Rickmond, 79, of Scottsburg died Wednesday, November 5, 2008. He was born in Halifax County on August 16, 1929, and was a member of Revelation Baptist Church and served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He lived with Gladys Womack, who was like a daughter to him.
In addition to Gladys, he is survived by one half-brother, Percy Tuck and wife Mildred of Richmond; two half-sisters, Nancy Williams of Richmond and Alice Surles and husband Tom of Richmond and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, November 8 at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Grant Dyer officiating. Burial followed in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Mary Frazier Short
Mrs. Mary Frazier Short, 88, of Halifax died Thursday, November 6, 2008 at Danville Regional Medical Center. She was born in Mecklenburg County on March 18, 1920, a daughter of the late Roger Franklin Frazier and Minnie Coghill Frazier and was married to the late Lewis Frank Short. She was a member of Revelation Baptist Church, a former nurse at Halifax Regional Hospital and had been a patient at Roman Eagle Nursing Home for ten months.
She is survived by two daughters, Sandra S. Stevens and husband Rev. Donnie G. Stevens of Rustburg and Kaye S. Dunkley and husband Barry of Danville and four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Alma F. Comer and Dorothy F. Smith.
Funeral services were held Saturday, November 8 at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. William Coghill officiating. Burial followed in Gravel Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, Mecklenburg County. Memorials may be directed to Revelation Baptist Church, South Boston, VA 24592.
Frederick Leon Walker
Mr. Frederick Leon Walker of 1803 Spring Avenue, South Boston died Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 39. Born in Halifax County on March 17, 1969, he was the son of Mr. Robert Walker and Mrs. Verna Mae King Walker.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Walker is survived by six sisters: Mrs. Shirley Timothy, Mrs. Josephine Ragland and Ms. Belinda Walker, all of South Boston, Mrs. Angela Harris, Mrs. Andrea Kirby and Mrs. Theresa Parrish, all of Halifax and two brothers, Mr. Sylvester Walker of South Boston and Mr. Robert Walker of Roxboro, N.C., five brothers-in-law, two sisters-in-law and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by one sister, Ms. Vera Mae Walker.
A funeral service for Mr. Walker will be conducted on Tuesday, November 11 at 2 p.m. at Greater Mayfield Apostolic Church with Elder Bernard Wilkins officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge cemetery. The family is receiving friends at the home, 1803 Spring Avenue, South Boston.
