Ahmad Jamal Hasan

Mr. Ahmad Jamal Hasan, also known as James Edmundson, of 612 Gravitt Street, South Boston died Sunday, November 2, 2008 at The Veterans Administration Medical Center in Durham, NC at the age of 63. Born in Halifax County on October 6, 1945 to the late Mr. James Albert Edmondson and Mrs. Ella Jane Wyatt Edmondson, he was married to Mrs. Betty Peeks Edmundson. He was a retired employee of the Halifax County SheriffÕs Department and was a United States Army veteran. Mr. Hasan was of the Muslim faith.
Mr. Hasan is survived by his wife of the home, two daughters, Ms. Shardena Edmundson and Ms. Rasheeda Edmundson, both of Richmond, a son, Mr. Albert M. Edmundson of Maryland, two sisters, Mrs. Nancy Coleman of South Boston and Ms. Laverne Edmundson of Washington, DC, two brothers, Mr. Howard ÒPeekabooÓ Edmondson of South Boston and Mr. Niam Hasan of Maryland, four grandchildren, a brother-in-law, Mr. William Coleman and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A funeral service for Mr. Hasan was held on Wednesday, November 5 at 1 p.m. at The Crawford House Chapel in Halifax. Burial followed in Halifax Memorial Gardens.

Velma Mebane Scott

Mrs. Velma Mebane Scott, 64, of 1153 Clover Road, Clover died Sunday, November 2, 2008 at her home. She was born in Danville on March 19, 1944, a daughter of the late Mr. Walter J. Mebane, Sr. and Mrs. Velma Cobbs. She was married to the late Mr. Linwood R. Scott and was a member of St. Matthew Baptist Church.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. Breon Scott and Mrs. Jonita Scott of South Boston; one grandson, Mr. Jarius Scott; four sisters, Ms. Delphire Mebane of Chicago, IL, Ms. Jean Mebane, Ms. Amy Mebane and Ms. Charlene Mebane, all of Danville; seven brothers, Mr. Morris Hayes of New York, Mr. Charles Mebane, Sr. of Clover, Mr. Samuel Mebane of Tocoma, WA, Mr. Walter J. Mebane, Jr. of Los Angeles, CA, Mr. Oscar D. Mebane, Sr. of Maryland, Mr. Jackie T. Mebane, Sr. of Marina, CA and Mr. Linwood A. Mebane of Chicago, IL; four sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by one grandson, Mr. Brandon Scott, two brothers, Mr. Wilson Mebane and Mr. Carl Mebane.
Funeral services will be held Friday, November 7 at noon at St. Matthew Baptist Church with Rev. Alfred Chandler officiating. The family will receive friends at the home.

Hugh Branford Edmondson

Mr. Hugh Branford Edmondson, 49, of 1045 Edmondson Trail, Clover died Monday, November 3, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was born in Halifax County on June 30, 1959, a son of Hugh Tyrus Edmondson and Grace Nichols ÒT.T.Ó Edmondson. He was married to Rita Faye Comer Edmondson and was a member of Scottsburg United Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents and wife, he is survived by one daughter, Tiffany Edmondson Shotwell of Clover; one son, Frankie Edmondson of Clover; one granddaughter, Skylar Shotwell of Clover; one step-daughter, Michelle Toombs Womack of Vernon Hill; one step-son, Jason Lee Toombs of South Boston and four step-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 5 at Powell Funeral Home with Rev. Maxine Crenshaw officiating. Burial followed in the Clover Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Scottsburg United Methodist Church.
Mary Bernice Solomon

Mary Bernice Solomon, 90, of 4004 Cary Street Road, Richmond died Sunday, November 2, 2008 at Augusta Medical Hospital. She was born in Halifax County on July 12, 1918, a daughter of the late George Eddie Solomon and Lucy Oakes Solomon. She was a member of First Cross Roads Baptist Church and was a retired employee of Medical College of Virginia.
She is survived by two nieces, Debra S. Girotti and husband Tom of Staunton, Betty L. Solomon of Greenville, SC; great-nieces, Hannah G. Girotti and Sarah E. Girotti and great-nephews, Micah E. Girotti and wife Elizabeth, Jonathan D. Girotti; one sister-in-law, Mildred S. Daniel of South Boston. She was preceded in death by a brother, George Edward Solomon.
Funeral services will be held today at 11:00 a.m. at First Cross Roads Baptist Church with Rev. Dan Ward officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Lt. Col. Kerry Lane

Retired Marine Lt. Col. Kerry Lane, 85, of Spotsylvania, died Saturday Nov. 1, 2008 at his home, Post Oak Farm.
Col. Lane, who retired from the Marine Corps in 1971, is noted as one of the CorpsÕ most highly decorated Marines. A combat veteran of World War II, the Korean and Vietnam Wars, he was awarded two Purple Hearts, the Silver Star Medal for conspicuous gallantry, two Bronze Star Medals for Valor, three Presidential Citations and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry.
Col. Lane was a charter member of the Military Order of the Purple Hearts, Chapter 1732; the Old Dominion Chapter of the 1st Marine Division Association; the Guadalcanal Campaign Veterans Association and the Retired Marine Officers Association.
Col. Lane was the author of two books, Marine Pioneers, The Unsung Heroes of World War II, and Guadalcanal Marine.
Survivors include his wife, Connie Sorrell Lane of Spotsylvania; one daughter, Sharon Lane Blanchard of Fredericksburg; two sons, Mark A. Lane of Spotsylvania and Jeffrey N. Lane of Halifax; a brother, Edward B. Lane of Cary, North Carolina and three grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
His remains rest at the Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service Spotsylvania Chapel where Funeral Services were held Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. Honors were posted by the American Legion, Post # 320. Rev. Ray Farrow, Pastor of Mine Road Baptist Church officiated. The family received friends at the funeral home following the service.
Burial will be held at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors, at a later date. Pallbearers will be the U.S. Marine Corps Honor Guard.
