He grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina where he graduated from Broughton High School, class of 1953. Dave graduated from N.C. State in 1957 with a major in textile design. That same year he married Josephine (Jo) Rand Cline Schreffler. After two years of service in the U.S. Navy, he began his career in 1959 as a designer at Burlington Industries in Halifax. He valued his work in textiles and the opportunity it provided him to be creative in his design work, and he felt fortunate to be able to contribute to the industry from which he retired in 1999. After the death of his first wife, Dave felt that God blessed him again with the love of a wonderful woman and he married Mary Bolyard Schreffler in 1999.
Dave was a former president of the Halifax Jaycees and worked with the Boy Scouts in Halifax. He had been involved during various times in his life with the Parsons Bruce Arts Association and The Halifax County Little Theatre. After his retirement he found enjoyment mentoring kids and volunteering as a guide at the Halifax Regional Hospital. Dave was an active member of Halifax United Methodist Church for over 45 years, serving on numerous boards, as a Lay Leader, Trustee and a member of the United Methodist Men. He, along with his wife Mary, worked tirelessly on the church's prayer garden. He loved God, his family and friends and enjoyed his life to the fullest. Dave enjoyed traveling and anything artistic, especially water color painting and photography. He also spent a lot of time woodworking, cooking, gardening, researching family genealogy, and mastering computers. Dave's family and friends will remember him most for his generous spirit, loving nature, creative mind, and infectious smile.
