OBITUARIES
Lester Eugene Younger
Mr. Lester Eugene Younger of Java died Monday, October 20, 2008 at Roman Eagle Memorial Home at the age of 80. Born in Halifax County on March 26, 1928, he was the son of the late Mr. Walter Younger and Mrs. Melissa Ross Younger and was a member of the Banister Hill C.M.E. Church.
Mr. Younger is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Bernice Barksdale of Chatham, Ms. Veronica Younger of Danville, Mrs. Nannie Petty, Mrs. Susie Terry and Ms. Sharon Younger, all of Java, three sons, Mr. Leon Terry of Vallejo, Calif., Mr. Lester Eugene Younger, Jr. of Philadelphia, Pa. and Mr. Donnell Younger of Germany, a sister, Mrs. Ethelean Islam of New York, N.Y., 17 grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, a son-in-law, four daughters-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by two sons, Mr. Earl Younger and Mr. James Younger, two daughters, Ms. Christine Younger and Ms. Shirley Ann Younger, a sister, Mrs. Emogene Thomas, three brothers, Mr. James Younger, Mr. George Younger and Mr. William Ross.
A funeral service for Mr. Younger will be conducted on Sunday, October 26 at 2:30 p.m. at the Crawford House Chapel in Halifax. Burial will follow in the Banister Hill C.M.E. Church cemetery. The family is receiving friends at the home, 9577 Halifax Road, Java. Viewing for family and friends will be at the Crawford House Chapel on Saturday from noon-6 p.m.
Hazel Virginia Miller Logan
Mrs. Hazel Virginia Miller Logan of Baltimore, Md., formerly of South Boston, died Sunday, October 19, 2008 in Baltimore at the age of 79. Mrs. Logan was born in Halifax County on September 6, 1929 to the late Mr. Barkley Miller and Mrs. Annie Lee Graves Miller and was married to the late Mr. Garland Mack Logan. She was a member of Deliverance Tabernacle of the Apostolic faith.
Mrs. Logan is survived by three daughters, Bishop Pat Miller Johnson of Baltimore, Mrs. Sondra Logan Garms of Tampa, Fl. and Mrs. Etonia Logan Artis of West Babylon, N.Y., two sons, Mr. Garland Mack Logan of South Boston and Mr. Barkley Anthony Logan of Brooklyn, N.Y., a sister, Mrs. Sallie Farmer of Brooklyn, a brother, Mr. Benjamin Miller of Silver Springs, Md., ten grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, three sons-in-law, two daughters-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A funeral service for Mrs. Logan will be conducted on Saturday, October 25 at 11 a.m. at Mt. Olive Baptist Church with Apostle Carl Daniel Lykes, Sr. and Bishop Lawrence Richard Burrell, Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in Five Fork Baptist Church cemetery. Public viewing for family and friends will be at the church on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service.
Bessie Smith Wilmouth
Mrs. Bessie Smith Wilmouth, 82, of Scottsburg died Sunday, October 19, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was born in Halifax County on July 9, 1926, a daughter of the late Harold Morgan Smith and Mary Isabel Clay Smith and was married to the late Saint Aubrey Wilmouth.
She is survived by one daughter, Nancy Audrey Wilmouth and husband Patrick William Rowe of Culver City, Calif.; one son, Roy Edward Wilmouth of Scottsburg; one grandson, Brad Edward Wilmouth; one brother, William Hagood Smith of Richmond; one sister, Frances King of Scottsburg and one step-sister, Elsie Bliss of Cluster Springs.
Graveside services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at Oakland Cemetery with Rev. Don Bryant officiating.
James William Oliver Jr.
Mr. James William Oliver Jr. of Baltimore, Md. died Saturday, October 18, 2008 in Baltimore at the age of 27. He was born in Baltimore on November 22, 1981 to Mrs. Odella Scott Oliver and the late Mr. James William Oliver, Sr.
Mr. Oliver is survived by a son, Mr. Joseph Oliver, his mother, two sisters, Mrs. Pamela Hester of Durham, N.C. and Mrs. Veronica Crawley of Richmond, a god sister, Ms. Lisa Miller of Baltimore, two brothers-in-law, a niece, Ms.Venus Crawley of Richmond and a host of aunts, uncles, other relatives and friends.
A funeral service for Mr. Oliver will be conducted on Saturday, October 25 at 1 p.m. at the Cross Roads Baptist Church in Turbeville. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family is receiving friends at the home of Mr. Robert Douglas Oliver, 4012 Turbeville Road, Turbeville.
Alan Morrell DeJarnette
Alan Morrell DeJarnette, 39, of 114 Barksdale Street, Brookneal died Friday, October 17, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was born March 17, 1969 in Halifax County, a son of Betty Poindexter DeJarnette of Brookneal and Willie DeJarnette of Nathalie. He was self-employed as a carpenter and was a member of Second Buffalo Baptist Church, Nathalie.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by two half-sisters, Nichelle Spencer (Alex) of Nathalie and Nakeisha DeJarnette of Halifax; his paternal grandmother, Leola DeJarnette of Nathalie and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 22 at Miller Funeral Home with Rev. Sandy Palmer officiating. Burial followed in the Barbour-Tune-DeJarnette Family Cemetery.
Carroll Ann Williams
Ms. Carroll Ann Williams of 1052 Riverdale Drive, South Boston died Monday, October 20, 2008 at Lynchburg General Hospital at the age of 65. She was born in Halifax County on December 28, 1942 to the late Mr. Dave Davis and Mrs. Signora Wyatt Davis and was first married to the late Rev. Howard Vass and later to the late Mr. Jesse Williams. She was a member of the Greater Mayfield Apostolic Church.
Ms. Williams is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Frederica Scott and Ms. Sonya Vass, both of South Boston, two sons, Mr. Floyd Davis of South Boston and Mr. Howard Vass of Danville, five sisters, Mrs. Rose Paylor of Waterburg, CT, Ms. Ernestine Davis of New Haven, CT, Mrs. Betty Mays of Jamaica, NY, Ms. Bessie Davis of Flushing, NY and Mrs. Gloria Edmondson of Danville, two sons-in-law, Mr. Felix Scott and Mr. Jonny Green, two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Darlene Davis and Mrs. Nicole Vass, two sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law, a devoted friend, Mr. Luis Hernandez and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Ms. Williams was preceded in death by one daughter, Mrs. Evette Green and a son, Mr. Warren Davis and a brother, Mr. Thomas Davis.
A funeral service for Ms. Williams will be held Saturday, October 25 at 3:30 p.m. at Greater Mayfield Apostolic Church with Elder Bernard Wilkins officiating. Burial will follow in the Rose Garden cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home, 4201 East Hyco Road, South Boston.
Bessie H. Bailey
Mrs. Bessie H. Bailey, 89, of 1139 Woods Creek Lane, Scottsburg died Friday, October 17, 2008 at The Woodview. She was born in Halifax County on May 27, 1919, a daughter of the late Mr. Willie Jesse Bailey and Mrs. Esther Jane Hicks Bailey. She was married to the late Mr. Waverly L. Coleman and later married Mr. Wallace LeVere and was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church.
She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Gene C. Contee and Mrs. Beulah C. Janey, both of Upper Marlboro, MD, Mrs. Clara C. Lumpkin of Scottsburg, Mrs. Frances C. Sugg of Bel Air, MD; 10 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren; two nephews, Mr. Gordon Coleman and Mr. Joseph M. Bailey; one niece, Ms. Yvette Davis; two sons-in-law, Mr. Townsend Janey and Mr. Irvin Sugg, Jr., other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by one grandson, Mr. Kevin Easley.
Funeral services will be held Friday, October 24 at 2:00 p.m. at Piney Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Whitfield Scott officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight at Jeffress Funeral Home from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
Geneva Barnett Drumwright
Mrs. Geneva Barnett Drumwright, 80, of 1203 Cherry Hill Church Road, South Boston died Saturday, October 18, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was born in Person County, NC on August 28, 1928, a daughter of the late Mr. Arthur Barnett and Mrs. Englebirth Ragland Barnett. She was married to the late Mr. Weldon Drumwright and was a member of Owens Grove Baptist Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Clarissa Reed of Alton and Mrs. Mary McClary of Baltimore, MD; two sons, Mr. Floyd Drumwright and Mr. Weldon Drumwright, both of Baltimore, MD; three sisters, Mrs. Catherine Williams, Ms. Daisy Barnett and Ms. Josephine Barnett, all of South Boston; two brothers, Mr. Herbert Barnett of Richmond and Mr. Willis Barnett of South Boston; six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, two sons-in-law, two daughters-in-law, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by one son, Mr. Albert Drumwright and two brothers, Mr. Thomas Barnett and Mr. Joseph Barnett.
Funeral services will be held today at 1:00 p.m. at Owens Grove Baptist Church with Rev. John Leigh officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Constance Erlina Watkins
Ms. Constance Erlina Watkins of 1098 Woods Creek Lane, Scottsburg died Monday, October 20, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 46. Born in Halifax County on September 5, 1962, she was the daughter of Mrs. Emma Britton Watkins and the late Mr. Charles Edward Watkins. She was a member of the St. James Baptist Church.
Mrs. Watkins is survived by her mother of Scottsburg, three sisters, Mrs. Carolene E. Lewis and Ms. Chandal E. Watkins, both of Richmond and Ms. Cynthia Watkins-Powell of Scottsburg, a brother, Mr. Clarence E. Watkins of Indianapolis, Indiana, a brother-in-law, Mr. Bruce Lewis of Richmond and a host of other relatives and friends.
A funeral service for Ms. Watkins will be conducted on Sunday, October 26 at 4 p.m at St. James Baptist Church with Reverend Ronald Claiborne officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family is receiving friends at the home, 1098 Woods Creek Lane, Scottsburg.
