Curtis William Toombs
Mr. Curtis William Toombs of 1215 Grubby Road, Halifax died Thursday, October 16, 2008 in South Boston. Born in Halifax County on April 22, 1931, he was 77 at the time of his death. He was the son of the late John Thomas Toombs and Fannie May Ferrell Toombs and was married to the late Thelma Mills Toombs. He was a member of the South Boston Church of God.
Mr. Toombs is survived by a daughter, Linda Toombs Pittman and husband, David of South Boston, a son, Michael T. Toombs and wife Vickie of Halifax, four grandchildren, Laura Pittman and Jason Toombs of South Boston and Samantha Toombs of Halifax and Michelle Womack of Vernon Hill, four great grandchildren, Chandler Toombs of South Boston, Junior Womack, Sierra Womack and Kurt Womack, all of Vernon Hill. He was preceded in death by a son, Curtis William Toombs, Jr. two sisters, Vera T. Moore and Rena T. Bane and five brothers, Phillip. Wesley, Cliff, Irvin and Al Toombs.
A funeral service for Mr. Toombs will be conducted on Tuesday, October 21 at 2 p.m. at the South Boston Church of God with the Rev. Bruce Hagy officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge cemetery with military rites. The family will receive friends Monday, October 20 from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the South Boston Church of God and at other times at the home of his daughter, Linda Pittman, 427 Valley Drive, South Boston. Wanda Sue Wood
Ms. Wanda Sue Wood of 1040 Azalea Lane, South Boston died Thursday, October 16, 2008 at her home. Born March 9, 1960 in Washington, D.C., she was 48 at the time of her death. Ms. Wood attended Centerville Baptist Church.
Ms. Wood is survived by a daughter, Angel Wood and a son, David Wood, her mother Judy Bea Voorhees Hertzong and her husband Howard, her father, Donald Albert Eslin and his wife, Rosa, two sisters, Dorothy Minter and Rose Foster and a brother, Willie B. Wilson, and a special friend and caretaker, Willie B. Wilson. She was preceded in death by a brother, Billy J. Eslin and her maternal grandparents, Harry and June Voorhees and her paternal grandparents, Charles Eslin and Ruth Duggin.

Emma Irvin Foster
Mrs. Emma Irvin Foster, 89, of Brooklyn, NY, formerly of Halifax County, died Saturday, October 11, 2008. She was born in Halifax County on September 17, 1918, a daughter of the late Mr. John D. Irvin and Mrs. Betty H. Irvin and was married to the late Mr. Shelton Foster.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Arlene Taylor-Blair of Brooklyn, NY; three sisters, Mrs. Gracie Acree, Ms. Mattie Irvin and Ms. Amanda Irvin, all of Alton; one brother, Mr. Elisha Irvin of Alton; five grandchildren, one son-in-law, Mr. William H. Blair and one sister-in-law, Mrs. Lillian Irvin, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Saturday, October 18 at Dan River Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. Dwight Wilkerson officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Everette John Cunningham
Mr. Everette John Cunningham of Cole Street, South Boston died October 15, 2008 at his home at the age of 55. Mr. Cunningham was born in Halifax County on March 31, 1953 and was the son of the late Mr. John Cunningham and Mrs. Doris Cunningham. He was a member of Crossroads Baptist Church.
He is survived by several loving cousins and friends.
A funeral service for Mr. Cunningham will be held Wednesday, October 22 at 2 p.m. at the Crossroads Baptist Church with Rev. John Hubbard officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Barbara Anne Peters Wilborn
Mrs. Barbara Anne Peters Wilborn, 91, of South Boston died October 15, 2008. She was the daughter of Dr. David W. Peters, past president of Radford University and Anne Bruce Peters. She was the widow of James Bailey Wilborn, Jr. and was a member of First Baptist Church, South Boston.
She is survived by a son, David Peters Wilborn of Bethesda, MD; a daughter, Bruce Wilborn Evans of Richmond; two sisters, Mary Peters Cunningham of Radford and Susan Peters Hall of Richmond; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
