Zachary Tyler Hudson

Zachary Tyler Hudson, 16, of 1155 Melon Road, Alton died Tuesday, October 14, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was born in South Hill on October 18, 1991, a son of Leslie Jordan Hudson and Thomas C. Hudson. He was junior at Halifax County High School, a member of First Cross Roads Baptist Church, a member of the Halifax County High School FFA, 4-H Honor and was a 4-H teen counselor.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by a sister, Rachel Kara Hudson and a brother, Christopher Heywood Hudson, both of Alton; his paternal grandparents, Hilton and Ann Hudson of Alton; his maternal grandparents, Heywood and Charlotte Jordan of Nathalie; four uncles, Ronnie Hudson and wife Shelia of Topping, Jamey Hudson and wife Melinda of Alton, Steve Hudson and wife Holly of Alton and Jonathan Hudson of Alton; one aunt, Janet Perkins and husband Richard of Richmond; and cousins Rebecca Perkins, Mary Jane Perkins, Hazel Bittenbender, Levi Hudson, Jason Hudson and Jaden Hudson.
Funeral services will be held Friday, October 17 at 2:00 p.m. at First Cross Roads Baptist Church with Rev. Dan Ward officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30-9:00 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home. Mattie Sue Terry Newman

Evangelist Mattie Sue Terry Newman, 86, of 4092 Bold Springs Road, South Boston died October 12, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was born in Halifax County on July 8, 1922, a daughter of the late Mr. John Terry and Mrs. Nannie Lovelace Terry. She was married to Mr. Harold Newman, Sr. and was a member of Christ Temple Blue Rock Apostolic Church.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Rev. Connie N. Miller and Ms. Priscilla N. Perry, both of South Boston; one son, Mr. Harold Newman, Jr. of South Boston; three grandchildren, Bishop Michael Orlando Perry, Elder Daryl J. Miller, Elder James H. Miller, II; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Pauline Montgomery of Connecticut; one son-in-law, Mr. Henry A. Miller; four sisters-in-law, including Mrs. Gracie L. Terry; two brothers-in-law, and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by four sisters, Mrs. Bessie Mae Robertson, Mrs. Esther Cardwell, Mrs. Adley Miller and Mrs. Elizabeth Brangman and four brothers, Mr. Johnny Terry, Mr. Pearlie Terry, Mr. Jimmy Terry and Mr. Nathaniel Eugene Terry.
Funeral services will be held Friday, October 17 at 1:00 p.m. at Dan River Bethel Baptist Church with Bishop Michael Orlando Perry and District Elder Donald Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7:00-8:00 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home.

Jean Comer Lowery

Jean Comer Lowery, 69, of 12068 Nike Park Road, Smithfield died Monday, October 13, 2008 in Buffalo Junction. She was born in Halifax County on May 17, 1939, a daughter of the late Raymond G. Comer and Evon Poole Comer and was married to Wallace S. Lowery. She was a member of Cherry Hill United Methodist Church, a member of the American Legion Post 49 Ladies Auxiliary and the womens Republican Club, both in Smithfield.
She is survived by two daughters, Rhonda L. Wilmoth and husband Timmy of Alton, Renee L. Choulnard and husband Kenneth of Rescue; sisters, Primrose C. Cole and husband Jack of South Boston, Connie C. Whitlow and husband J.C. of Danville, Carolyn Duffer and husband Aubrey of South Boston, Jerrie Comer of Roxboro, NC; brother, Henry R. Comer and wife Sandra of Roxboro, NC; grandchildren, Melanie Chappell and husband H.L. Chappell, II, Cody M. Choulnard and Hunter L. Choulnard and great-grandchildren, Ashley Chappell and Kaylaan Chappell.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, October 18 at 1:00 p.m. at Cherry Hill United Methodist Church with Rev. Barbara Barker officiating. Mamie Hill Cassada

Mrs. Mamie Hill Cassada, 86, of 207 Merritt Street, South Boston died Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was born in Roanoke Rapids, NC on July 4, 1922, a daughter of the late Zennie Thomas Hill and Leona Killebrew Hill and was married to the late William Aubrey Cassada. She was a member of Union United Methodist Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Judith C. Bowen of South Boston; one sister, Irma H. Sebastiani of Jacksonville, FL; one granddaughter, one great-granddaughter, Jessalyn C. Uhrin.
Graveside services will be held Friday, October 17 at 1:00 p.m. at Union United Methodist Church with Rev. Maxine Crenshaw officiating. Frances Steube Elliott

Mrs. Frances Steube Elliott, 78, of 1083 East Oak Hill Drive, Halifax died Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was born in South Boston on August 27, 1930, a daughter of the late Edward Steube and Myrtle Talbott Steube and was married to the late Ira Berkley "Doll Baby" Elliott. She was a member of McCanless Memorial United Methodist Church, where she was a former Sunday school teacher; she served as a Cub Scout leader and Boy Scout leader and was a member of the Eastern Star.
She is survived by one son, Berkley Steube "Jack" Elliott and wife Carolyn of Lynchburg; one granddaughter, Ann Blane Elliott Wootten and husband Bradley; one grandson, Matthew Berkley Elliott and wife Sally; two great-grandchildren, Caroline Leigh Wootten and Maren Dunnington Elliott. She was preceded in death by one sister, Rosalee Steube Woltz and one brother, George Edward Steube, II.
Funeral services will be held Friday at Powell Funeral Home at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Ann Norton officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Memorials may be directed to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 3959 Electric Road, Suite 222, Roanoke, VA 24018.


Claude Hoyle Sanders

Mr. Claude Hoyle Sanders, 73, of 4817 Burris Road, Denver, NC died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008 at his home. Mr. Sanders was born on Dec. 13, 1934, in Gaston County to the late Robert Mark Sanders and Velma McAlister Sanders McGee.
He is survived by his wife, Shelby Lineberger of the home, two daughters, Pamela Troxler of Denver NC and Sherry Mabe of Monroville, Pa., two brothers, Glenn Sanders of Alton and Wayne Sanders of Littleton, NC, one sister, Vicki Homesley of Cherryville, NC, and five grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2008 at Westport Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Young, Rev. Don Greene and Rev. David Mims officiating. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Lincolnton with military honors.

Patricia Ann Baugher Dean

Patricia Ann Baugher Dean, 72, of 710 Grove Avenue, South Boston died Tuesday, October 14, 2008 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was born in Elwood, IN on February 27, 1936, a daughter of the late George L. Baugher and Freada Hancock Baugher and was married to the late Alva Wayne Dean. She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church and retired employee of Burlington Industries, Inc.
She is survived by three daughters, Cindy Throckmorton and husband David of Scottsburg, Diana Cole and husband Danny of Virgilina, Jenny Knutti and husband Bob of South Boston; a son, Tommy Dean and wife Elaine of Scottsburg; a sister, Joy Thomason of Anderson, IN; loving companion, Gene Murray of South Boston; grandchildren, Jill, Christy, Wendy, Jennifer, Megan, Tricia, Michael, Tera, Melissa and great-grandchildren Chandler, Ashton, Tyler, Daniel, Cole, Natalie, Erin. She was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Wayne Dean.
Funeral services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at Main Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Ed Rigg officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
