OBITUARIES

Donald Keith Allen

Mr. Donald Keith Allen, 71, of South Boston died Saturday, October 4, 2008 at his home. He was born in Mingo County, West Virginia on February 13, 1937, a son of the late Watson Allen and Anise Boggs Allen and was married to Mary Ruth Snodgrass Allen. He was the owner of Allens Drug Store, served on the YMCA State Board and a member of the Southfax Sertoma Club. He coached little league football, was a Mason with the Faulkner Lodge and served on the Virginia State Pharmaceutical Board. Allen also served as the Booster Club President, Sunday school teacher at First Baptist Church and was a board member for Sovran Bank.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Judith Allen of South Boston, Joyce Roberts and husband David of Chesterfield and Janice Le and husband Liem of Chesterfield; eight grandchildren, Nathan, Mary and Sam Lantor, Kirsten, Lee and Keith Roberts, Ben and Rachel Le; one brother, Watson Allen of West Point.
Graveside services were held Wednesday, October 8 at Oak Ridge Cemetery with Rev. Orman Boggs officiating. Memorials may be directed to a charity of your choice.

Lucy Mae Pressley Frazier

Lucy Mae Pressley Frazier, 91, of Marion, formerly of South Boston and Tazewell, died Friday, September 26, 2008 at Ridgefield Assisted Living. She was born November 1, 1916 at Boissevain, VA, a daughter of the late George and Hannah Pressley and made her home with Luther and Grace Franklin.
She is survived by one brother, Luther E. Franklin and wife Helen of Tannersville; nieces and nephews, Clara Corell and husband Robert, Sandy Carter and husband Brad, Pat Britton and husband John, Edward Franklin and wife Leigh Ann, Don Franklin and wife Pam, Leonard Schlachter and wife Diane, William Schlachter and wife Doris, Barbara Campbell and husband Ken, Robert James Frazier and wife Anna May, several great-nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held Sunday, October 11 at 1:00 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, South Boston with Gary Butterworth officiating. Private burial will be held at Halifax Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be directed to Trinity Episcopal Church, 515 Yancey Street, South Boston, VA 24592.

Richard James Owens

Richard James Owens, formerly of Halifax, died October 4, 2008 in Richmond. Funeral services will be held today at 1:00 p.m. at Chicago Avenue Baptist Church, Richmond, with Rev. Dr. Marlon Haskell, pastor, eulogy by Rev. Glenn Mason. Interment will follow in Maury Cemetery.

William Hosie Akers

Mr. William Hosie (Bill) Akers, 85, of 391 Cedar Lane, Halifax died Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at Veterans Community Living Center, Richmond. He was born in Floyd County on August 10, 1923, a son of the late Howard Akers and Edna Reed Akers and was married to Freeda Harman Akers. He was a World War II D-Day veteran, participated as a cannoneer on a 105 Howitzer in France, Rhineland and Germany campaigns and landed on Omaha Beach June 6, 1944 and was wounded in Germany Nov. 27, 1944 and was awarded the purple heart. A retired jeweler, he was a member of the Halifax Volunteer Fire Department for 25 years, a lifetime member of the Virginia Jaycees, a member of the Halifax Lions Club, a Boy Scout leader and a member of the Halifax United Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Neal Akers of Midlothian; one grandson, Will Akers and one granddaughter, Ashley Thompson and husband Mark, all of Midlothian; five sisters, Claudine Poff of Jacksonville, FL, Ann Vaughan and Doretta Shorter, both of Christiansburg, Lynn Hughes of Baton Rouge, La. and Peggy Reed of Chester; four brothers, Shirl Akers and Ray Akers, both of Beltsville, Md, Robert Akers of Salisbury, Md. and Richard Akers of Gaithersburg, Md.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Oct. 10 at 2 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home with Rev. Randy Williams officiating. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends tonight from 7-8:30 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to the Halifax Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 513, Halifax, VA 24558, Halifax United Methodist Church, or a charity of your choice.

Florence Smith Hite

Florence Smith Hite, 78, of 426 Holland Circle, Axton died Sunday, October 5, 2008 at Morehead Memorial Hospital. She was born in Halifax County on July 9, 1930, a daughter of the late Harace P. Smith and Mary B. Keatts Smith. She was married to the late Lee Roy Hite, was a retired worker at Burlington Industries and was a member of Black Walnut Baptist Church.
She is survived by a son, Riley E. Hite and wife Nona of South Boston; daughter, Dale Martin and husband Dean of Axton; daughter-in-law, Maneula Hite of Spring Lake, N.C.; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Bobbie Lee Hite.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 8 at Black Walnut Baptist Church with Rev. Raymond Wooten officiating. Burial followed in Halifax Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be directed to Black Walnut Baptist Church or the Cluster Springs Volunteer Fire Department.
