OBITUARIES
Donald Keith Allen
Donald Keith Allen of South Boston died Saturday, October 4, 2008 at his home. Born in Mingo County, West Virginia on February 13, 1937, he was 71 at the time of his death. He was the son of the late Watson Allen and the late Anise Boggs Allen and was married to Mary Ruth Snodgrass Allen. He was the owner of Allens Drug Store, served on the YMCA State Board and was a member of the Southfax Sertoma Club. He coached little league football, was a Mason with the Faulkner Lodge and served on the Virginia State Pharmaceutical Board. He also served as the Booster Club President, Sunday School teacher at First Baptist Church and was a board member for Sovran Bank.
Mr. Allen is survived by is wife of the home, three daughters, Judith Allen of South Boston, Joyce Roberts and husband David of Chesterfield and Janice Le and husband Liem, also of Chesterfield and eight grandchildren, Nathan, Mary and Sam Lantor, Kirsten, Lee and Keith Roberts and Ben and Rachel Le. Also surviving is a brother, Watson Allen of West Point.
Funeral arrangements were incomplete at press time, but will be announced later by Powell Funeral Home.
Evvie Wilkerson Saunders
Mrs. Evvie Wilkerson Saunders of Scottsburg died Saturday, October 4, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Born in Charlotte County on July 4, 1924, she was 84 at the time of her death. She was the daughter of the late William Hannibal Wilkerson and the late Ellie Robey Wilkerson and was married to the late Floyd Hilton ìDickî Saunders. She was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church.
Mrs. Saunders is survived by one son, William Daniel ìBillî Saunders and wife Rachel of Scottsburg, four grandchildren, April S. Lacks and husband Chris of Mt. Laurel, Jessica Roberts Saunders, William Jordan Saunders and Jacob Daniel Saunders, all of Scottsburg and three great grandchildren, Summer, Chloe and Sarah Lacks of Mt. Laurel. Also surviving are two brothers, Ira Wilkerson and Raleigh Wilkerson, both of Scottsburg. She was preceded in death by one son, Floyd H. “Dickie” Saunders.
A funeral service for Mrs. Saunders will be conducted on Monday, October 6 at 11 a.m. at Powell Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Don Pizzeck officiating. Burial will follow in the Bethel Baptist Church cemetery. The family is receiving friends at the home of her son, 1100 Rich Point Lane, Scottsburg.
Mary Gene Lindley
Miss Mary Gene Lindley of 2239 Love Shop Road, Halifax died Friday, October 3, 2008 at her home. Born December 17, 1951, she was 56 at the time of her death and was the daughter of the late Russell E. Lindley, Sr. and Mary Graham Lindley, who survives. She was a member of the Halifax United Methodist Church where she had an active role in the church choir.
Miss Lindley is survived by her mother of Halifax, three brothers, Terry Lindley and wife Sharon of Bahama, NC, Russell E. Lindley, Jr. of Halifax and Michael G. Lindley and wife Cydney of South Boston, four nephews and one niece.
A funeral service for Miss Lindley was conducted on Sunday, October 5 at 2 p.m. at Halifax United Methodist Church with the Rev. Randy Williams officiating. Burial followed in Oak Ridge cemetery. The family received friends at her home, 2239 Love Shop Road, Halifax. Connie Lacks Whitt
Mrs. Connie Lacks Whitt of 3191 Buckshoal Road, Virgilina died Friday, October 3, 2008 at her home. Born March 19, 1963, she was 45 at the time of her death. A homemaker, she was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy.
Mrs. Whitt is survived by her husband, Douglas Ray Whitt of the home, her mother-in-law, Marcelle Whitt of Virgilina, two sisters, Janice Griffin and husband Jerry of Charlotte Court House and Josephine Daniels and husband Luther of Meherrin, three brothers, Bobby Lacks and wife Edith, Johnny Edward Lacks and Sammy Lacks and wife Irene, all of Saxe and a sister-in-law, Janet Lacks. She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert B. Lacks and Betty Jane Lacks and three brothers, Warren, Melvin and Ronnie Lacks.

Willsie Cole Francis
Mrs. Willsie Cole Francis of 1104 Waddell Lane, South Boston died Friday, October 3, 2008 at The Woodview. Born in Halifax County on December 8, 1924, she was 83 at the time of her death. She was formerly employed at Ash Avenue Baptist Church was was a member of Main St. United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Eastern Star, the Tuesday Womanís Club and the Halifax Regional Hospital Auxiliary.
Mrs. Francis is survived by a daughter, Patricia F. Burton and husband, Jimmy of South Boston, a grandson Jim Burton and wife Eve of Mechanicsville, a granddaughter, Luanna B. Daniel of South Boston, a great granddaughter, Addison of Mechanicsville, two brothers, Thurman Cole and wife Ann of South Hill and John R. Cole and wife, Angel of Darlington, S.C. and two sisters, Louise Jones and Peggy C. Burton and husband, George and a sister-in-law, Margaret L. Cole, all of South Boston. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie J. Francis and her parents, Charles Spencer Cole and Sophronia Lowery Cole and a brother C. B. Cole.
A funeral service for Mrs. Francis will be conducted on Monday, October 6 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Ed Rigg and Rev. John Eure officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery. Mary Edna Boyd Black
Mrs. Mary Edna Boyd Black, age 90 of Nathalie, died October 1, 2008 in Lynchburg. She was the daughter of the late Mr. Grant Boyd and Mrs. Roena Word Boyd and was married to the late Mr. George W. Black. She was a member of the New Second Buffalo Baptist Church.
Mrs. Black is survived by four sons, Marvin Black (Edith) of the home; Kenneth Black (Barbara Jean) of Nathalie, George (Shelia) Black of Upper Marlboro, Md. and Harry Black (Gloria) of Delaware, eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

John Marshall Buster
Mr. John Marshall Buster of 2044 Woods Creek lane, Scottsburg died Wednesday, October 1, 2008 at The Woodview at the age of 71. Born in Halifax County on August 17, 1937 to the late Mr. John M. Buster and Mrs. Fannie Hicks Buster, he was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church.
Mr. Buster is survived by five brothers, Albert Buster of Bremerton, Wash., Cain Buster of Hopewell, Col. Gilbert Buster of Germany, Wilbert Buster and Jesse Buster, both of Scottsburg, five sisters, Mrs. Marion Dixon of Mays Landing, NJ, Ms. Shirley Buster of Pleasantville, N.J., Ms. Eva Buster, Ms. Kate Buster and Ms. Gloria Buster, all of Atlantic City, N.J., four sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Mrs. Fannie Webb.
A funeral service for Mr. Buster will be conducted on Tuesday, October 7 at 1 p.m. at Piney Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Whitfield Scott officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home, 2044 Woods Creek Lane, Scottsburg.
