OBITUARIES
Ralph Newman Elliott
Mr. Ralph Newman Elliott, 80, of Virgilina died Friday, September 26, 2008 at The Woodview, South Boston. He was born November 19, 1927 in Halifax County to the late George Apple Elliott and Gracie Viola Fletcher Elliott. He was preceded in death by his brothers: Claude W. Elliott, Clarence C. Elliott, George A. Elliott, Jr., F. Briggs Elliott, and Alvah F. (Pete) Elliott.
Mr Elliott spent most of his adult life in the Washington DC area before retiring to his beloved home in Virgilina. He was a Certified Public Accountant and an adjunct professor of accounting and ethics at Benjamin Franklin University, now the School of Business and Public Management at the George Washington University. Mr Elliott also taught at Southeastern University in Washington, D.C. He retired as Controller of the Phi Beta Kappa Society Headquarters in Washington, D.C. He had been actively involved in the DC Institute of CPAs as well as the Mended Hearts program at Washington Medical Center. Since his return to Halifax, he spent untold hours as a volunteer with the Literacy Program and as a volunteer at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was a member of the Clarksville Presbyterian Church; the Scottish Rite and was a 32nd degree Mason. Mr. Elliott was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving two tours of active duty.
He is survived by his niece Mary Elizabeth and her husband James Seamster of Chesterfield and their children: David and his wife Kensie Seamster of Midlothian and Jennifer Seamster and her fiancé Joseph Krugler of Reston,; nephew Charles and his wife Melanie Elliott and their children: Chelsea, Chase and Parker Elliott of Peoria, Ariz. and his sister-in-law Mary Maude Elliott of Midlothian. Also surviving are sister-in-law Grace Sue Elliott of Virgilina and her daughter Enola Gay and her husband David Harvey and their children: Emily, Sarah and Molly Harvey Lynchburg and her daughter Donna Jane Elliott of Rustburg.
A memorial service will be held at Union Christian Church in Virgilina Saturday, October 4 at 12 noon. Interment with military honors will be held at 2 p.m. November 6 at Arlington National Cemetery Columbarium. In lieu of flowers, please consider The Virgilina Cemetery Fund, P.O. Daisy Jones Chambers
Mrs. Daisy Jones Chambers, 84, of 1056 Mason Chapel Road, Alton died Sunday, September 28, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was born in Halifax County on June 29, 1924, a daughter of the late Mr. John Jones and Mrs. Rosa Stevens Jones and was married to the late Mr. John Mayfield Chambers. She was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church, Alton.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Shirley Coleman of Alton; two sons, Mr. John Chambers, Jr. of Bronx, N.Y. and Mr. Joseph Chambers of Hemstead, N.Y.; one sister, Mrs. Janie Hughes of South Boston; two brothers, Mr. Joseph Jones of Omega and Mr. Henry Jeffress Jones of Jacksonville, FL; nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; one son-in-law, Mr. Alfred Coleman, two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Annsha Chambers and Mrs. Clara Chambers; one brother-in-law, Dr. James C. Chambers; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Ruth Brittian, Mrs. Evelyn Jones and Mrs. Betty Jones, other relatives and friends, including Mrs. Olivia Jones, Mrs. Jerlean Coleman and Mrs. Ernestine Johnston.
Funeral services will be held Friday, October 3 at 3:00 p.m. at New Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. Harvey Bigelow officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at 1016 Mason Chapel Road, Alton.
Lawrence William Tuttle
Lawrence William Tuttle, 95, of Wilson, N.C. died September 29, 2008 after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s Disease. He was born in High Point, N.C. on June 20, 1913, a son of the late John William and Lula Eggleton Tuttle and was married to the late Esther Nicholas Tuttle. He worked in accounting with Imperial Tobacco Company until his retirement, was a World War II veteran and a member of First Baptist Church, Wilson.
He is survived by a daughter, Cheryl Bumgarner and son-in-law, John Michael Bumgarner of Wilson; grandchildren, Scott Michael Bumgarner and wife and Lisa Michelle Bumgarner of Durham, N.C.; one great-granddaughter, Bailey Ann Bumgarner. He was preceded in death by a brother, Clarence Tuttle.
Graveside services were held Wednesday at Halifax Memorial Gardens with Rev. Steve Clayton officiating. Memorials may be directed to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, NY 10018 or to your favorite charity.
Jacob Michael Bunker
Jacob Michael Bunker, 22, of 107 Crosland Avenue, Apt. 1, Danville, died Friday, September 26, 2008. Born February 10, 1986 in Richmond, he was the son of Virginia Louise Bunker Clark. He lived most of his life in Halifax County prior to moving to Danville two years ago. He worked at Stevens & Sons Lumber Yard in Ringgold,. He was of the Catholic faith.
In addition to his mother, Jacob is survived by his twin brother, Daniel Bunker of Ringgold; brothers, Robert Bunker of South Boston and Jeremiah Bunker of Farmville. Also surviving is his maternal grandmother, Betty Louise Bunker of Danville.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 1, 11:00 a.m., graveside at Halifax Memorial Gardens, South Boston with Rev. Charles Breindel and the Rev. Dana Cook officiating.
Susie Gray Bumpass
Susie Gray Bumpass, 81, died Sunday, September 21, 2008 in Baltimore, MD. She was a native of Virgilina and daughter of the late Eugene and Mattie Royster Bumpass. She was a graduate of Virgilina High School, University of North Carolina at Greensboro and John Hopkins School of Nursing, Baltimore, where she worked in the nursing profession for many years. She also held nursing positions in Chapel Hill, NC.
She is survived by cousins George Woltz of Florida, Nancy Woltz Johnson of Tennessee and Susan Royster Reynolds of North Carolina.
Memorial services were held in Virgilina Cemetery Sunday, September 28.
Frank Lorenzo Robinson
Mr. Frank Lorenzo Robinson, 69, of 1164 Stitch Lane, Clover died Sunday, September 28, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was born in Halifax County on June 15, 1939, son of the late Ms. Dorothy Ward and was married to Mrs. Juanita Robinson. He was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his mother-in-law, Mrs. Alma Roberts of Clover; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Delores Darby, Mrs. Sylvia Sealy and Mrs. Lisa Harris; three brothers-in-law, Mr. Leslie Darby, Mr. Troy Harris and Mr. Raymond Roberts; one aunt, Mrs. Maria Gaillard; one uncle, Mr. William Gaillard; two God children, Mrs. Shince Henderson and Ms. Tyazesha Shuler, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Friday, October 3 at 1:00 p.m. at Bethlehem Baptist Church with Rev. Mattie Carr officiating. Burial will follow in the Davis-Moore Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home.
