Jack Edgar Holt

Mr. Jack Edgar Holt, 53, of 7033 Leda Road, Nathalie died Friday, September 25, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was born in Richmond on June 11, 1955, a son of Mattie Landrum Parker and the late Jack Holt. He was married to Brenda Holt, attended Shady Grove United Methodist Church and was a member of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Hunter Holt of South Boston and Joshua Cox of Melbourne, FL; his mother, Mattie L. Parker and husband Paul of Richmond; one sister, Yvonne Council of Clarksville; two half-brothers, Paul Parker of Richmond and David Parker of Arlington; one half-sister, Donna Parker and husband Hal of Fredericksburg; a special friend, Paulette Daniel of South Boston; special friends, Mick and Martha Conner, Dottie Brown and Jeff Powell, the Gold Wing Road Riders and his in-laws, Donald and Mary West of Chase City.
Funeral services were held Sunday, September 28 at Powell Funeral Home with Rev. George Gorman officiating. Burial followed in Halifax Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be directed to the Halifax County Cancer Association, P.O. Box 875, South Boston, VA 24592.

Lois Vivian Harris Mayo

Mrs. Lois Vivian Harris Mayo of 6163 Clays Mill Road, Scottsburg died Thursday, September 25, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 90. Born in Halifax County on August 12, 1918 to the late Mr. Jacob Harris and Mrs. Cora Bailey Harris Anderson, she was married to the late Mr. George Washington Mayo. She was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Nathalie and was a retired Halifax County Public School teacher with 42 years of service.
Mrs. Mayo is survived by a daughter, Ms. Brenda Mayo Sadler of Scottsburg, a foster son, Mr. James Jennings (Mary) of Alexandria, a devoted sister, Mrs. Wynona Godwin of Philadelphia, Pa., a brother, Mr. Chaucer Harris of New York, three grandchildren, Ms. La'Tonya Sadler of Evanston, Ms. Monica Sadler of South Boston and Mr. Mario Sadler of Charlottesville, a loving sister-in-law, Mrs. Julia Britton of Clover a brother-in-law, Mr. Alfred Godwin and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Mr. Murray Harris and Mr. Eugene Harris and a sister, Mrs. Marie Britton.
A funeral service for Mrs. Mayo will be conducted on Monday, September 29 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Nathalie with the Rev. James Traynham officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home, 6163 Clays Mill Road, Scottsburg.

Donald M. Byrd, Sr.

Mr. Donald McBurney Byrd, Sr. of 9153 L. P. Bailey Memorial Highway, Nathalie died Thursday, September 25, 2008 at the age of 46. Born in Halifax County on May 28, 1962, he was the son of the late Mr. Charlie Byrd, Sr. and Mrs. Hallie Lawson Byrd. He was a member of New Mt. Olive Apostolic Church and was an employee of Dollar General Distribution Center.
Mr. Byrd is survived by two daughters, Ms. Arleshia S. Byrd and Ms. Felicia L. Crews, both of Brookneal, two sons, Mr. Donald M. Byrd, Jr. and Mr. DeVonta O. Crews, both of Brookneal, six sisters, Mrs. Irene Oliver of Danville, Mrs. Marjorie Dixon and Mrs. Carolyn Hart, both of Halifax, Ms. Georgia Byrd of Hartford, CT, Mrs. Hallie Jones of Crystal Hill and Mrs. Anna Cook of Washington, D.C., a brother, Mr. Michael Byrd of Hartford, Conn., three aunts, Mrs. Gertrude Byrd of Halifax, Mrs. Mary Stovall of Raleigh, N.C. and Mrs. Mary Williamson of Clarksville, an uncle, Mr. Howard Moorman of Brookneal, a sister-in-law, Mrs. Diane Byrd of Hartford, five brothers-in-law, Mr. Lawrence Oliver of Danville, Mr. John Dixon and Mr. Robert Hart, both of Halifax, Mr. Addie Jones of Crystal Hill and Mr. Roger Cook of Washington, D.C., devoted friends: Mr. Floyd Canada, Mr. Paul Streeter, Mr. Clyde Palmer and the Crews family and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, Mr. Byrd was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Alice Stovall and Ms. Nellie Byrd, and two brothers, Mr. Charlie Byrd, II and Mr. Charles Byrd.
A funeral service for Mr. Byrd will be conducted on Wednesday, October 1 at 2 p.m. at New Mt. Olive Apostolic Church with District Elder Leonia Palmer officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive family and friends at the home, 9153 L. P. Bailey Memorial Highway, Nathalie.
