Virginia Hazelwood Irby
Virginia Hazelwood Irby, 70, of 2092 North Terry’s Bridge Road, Halifax died Wednesday, September 17, 2008 in Lynch Station. She was born on May 22, 1938 in Clover, a daughter of the late John Anderson Hazelwood and Dora Mae Hazelwood. She was a member of the South Boston Church of God where she served as the secretary of Sunday School and a member of the choir for 50 years and she was a retired employee of Roses Department Store.
She is survived by two sons, Bernard Lewis Irby, Jr. and friend Darnell of Halifax and Alan Randall Irby and wife Laura of Scottsburg; two daughters, VaDonna Irby Hatcher and husband Donald of Scottsburg and Bonita Irby Sadler and husband Frankie of Clover; the children’s father, Bernard L. Irby, Sr. of Halifax; two brothers, Harvey Hazelwood and wife Kay of Lynch Station and Richard Hazelwood and wife Laverne of Halifax; two sisters, Sally H. Powell of Roxboro, NC and Virla H. Mills of South Boston; eight grandchildren, Donna H. Hackney, Shannon H. Perkins, Kristy S. Satterfield, Michael Irby, Brian Irby, Evan Irby, Benjamin Irby and Paul Irby, and eight great-grandchildren, the love of her life. She was preceded in death by a sister, Minnie H. Powell and a brother, Joseph A. Hazelwood.
Funeral services were held Saturday, September 20 at South Boston Church of God with the Rev. Bruce Hagy officiating. Burial followed in Halifax Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be directed to the South Boston Church of God Building Fund, 3000 Halifax Road, South Boston, VA 24592.
Willie (Dick) H. Chambers, Jr.
Mr. Willie (Dick) Howard Chambers, Jr., 62, of 9760 L.P. Bailey Highway, Nathalie died Wednesday, September 17, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was born in Halifax County on January 25, 1946, a son of Mrs. Sallie Ann Traynham Chambers and the late Mr. Willie Howard Chambers, Sr.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by one son, Mr. Alphonzo Fallen of South Boston; two brothers, Mr. Gene Chambers of Halifax and Mr. David Chambers of Graham, NC; eight sisters, Mrs. Virginia Jones and Mrs. Patricia Boyd, both of South Boston, Mrs. Mary Johnson, Mrs. Josephine Williams, Mrs. Catherine Davis and Ms. Jeanette Chambers, all of Halifax, Mrs. Lucille Waller and Mrs. Margaret Tucker, both of Nathalie; four brothers-in-law, Mr. John Lewis Jones, Mr. William Waller, Mr. John Henry Williams and Mr. Stanley Tucker; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Tonya Chambers; two devoted friends, Mr. John Dixon and Ms. Shirley Dixon; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by one brother, Mr. Calvin Chambers.
Funeral services were held Saturday, September 20 at 2:00 p.m. at the Crawford House Chapel, Halifax with burial following in First Baptist Church Cemetery, Meadville.
Lilton Grant Garrett
Mr. Lilton Grant Garrett, “LG”, 80, of South Boston died Thursday, September 17, 2008 at Berry Hill Nursing Home. He was born November 6, 1927, a son of the late Julius Garrett, Sr. and Mary Palmer Garrett and was married to Mrs. Loretta Clark Garrett.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sisters, Alice Farmer of Newark, NJ and Agnes Coleman of New York City; five sisters-in-law, Nannie Garrett, Patti Brown, Ruth Clark, sDorothy McDaniel and Louise Clark; two brothers-in-law, Sidney Clark and Freddie Coleman; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Sunday, September 21 at Dunn & Sons Funeral Home with burial following in Ellis Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
Ernest Douglas Spencer
Mr. Ernest Douglas Spencer, 74, of 1420 Peach Avenue, South Boston died Thursday, September 18, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was born in Halifax County on March 23, 1934, a son of the late Ernest Fowler Spencer and Mildred Holland Spencer and was married to Mary Long Spencer. He was a retired merchant.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Elizabeth Spencer Spraggins and husband Michael J. of Raleigh, NC, Lynne Marie Spencer of Fort Worth, TX and Dana Spencer Blanks and husband David A. of South Boston; one son, Douglas F. Spencer of Durham, NC; and one sister, Lessie S. Bennett and husband Ted of Halifax.
Funeral services were held Saturday, September 20 at Trinity Episcopal Church with Rev. Gary Butterworth officiating. Burial followed in Oak Ridge Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association, 4217 Park Place Court, Glen Allen, VA 20060.
Garland W. Rice
Mr. Garland W. Rice, 69, of 106 Hedgerow Drive, Halifax died in his home Thursday, September 18, 2008. He was born in Charlotte County on January 18, 1939, a son of the late Guy W. Rice and Annie Belle W. Rice. He was a retired Independent Insurance Agent of Garland W. Rice Insurance Agency.
He is survived by four sons, Dennis T. Rice and wife Stacy of Clarksville, Donnie K. Rice and companion Crystal Lowery of Lexington, NC, Wess Rice of Bedford, Steve Rice of Lynchburg; one daughter, Wanda R. Vaughan and husband Jeff of Lynchburg; three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; three brothers, Phram Rice of Lakeland, FL, Ray Rice and wife Helen of Garrettsville, OH, Raymond Rice and wife Gladys of Conway, SC; one sister, Virginia Rice of Halifax; special nephew, Larry Rice and wife Beverly of Nathalie; special friend, Lorene Clark of South Boston; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by six brothers, Oliver “Smokey” Rice, Clifton Rice, Ernest Rice, Morelle “Mike” Rice, James Rice and Lewis Rice and one sister, Dorothy Ann Saunders.

Mrs. Etta May Keeton Wall
Mrs. Etta May Keeton Wall, 95, of 3236 Bill Tuck Highway, South Boston died Friday, September 19, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Born in Mecklenburg County on October 23, 1912, she was a homemaker and a member of Buffalo Baptist Tabernacle.
Mrs. Wall is survived by two sons, Lawrence Allen Wall and wife, Pauline of Buffalo Junction and Robert W. Wall and wife, Lou Etta of South Boston, seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and 11 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Wise Wall and her parents, William Allen Keeton and Mattie Wilkerson Keeton, one great-great grandchild and a number of brothers and sisters.
A funeral service for Mrs. Wall will be conducted today, September 22 at 2 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. William Coghill officiating. Burial will follow in the Buffalo Baptist Tabernacle cemetery. Online condolences may be sent to brooksfh@embarqmail.com.
