OBITUARIES

J.B. Puryear

Mr. J.B. Puryear, 73, of 5185 Old Cluster Springs Road, South Boston died Monday, September 15, 2008 at his home. He was born in Halifax County on September 22, 1934, a son of the late Willie Lee Puryear and Myrtle Whitt Puryear and was married to Hazel Wallace Puryear. He was a tobacco farmer and member of Black Walnut Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Tony Lee Puryear, Timothy Wallace Puryear and Todd Franklin Puryear, all of South Boston; two sisters, Annie Bruce of Norfolk and June Young of Virgilina; and grandchildren, Brad Puryear, Ryan Puryear, Frankie Puryear, Drake Puryear and great-grandchildren, McKensie Puryear and Dylan Puryear.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at Black Walnut Baptist Church with Rev. Raymond Wooten officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Howard George Glasscock

Mr. Howard George Glasscock, 91, of 1068 Covered Bridge Trail, Virgilina died Monday, September 15, 2008 at The Woodview. He was born in Halifax County on July 1, 1917, a son of the late Zachariah “Tom” Glasscock and Carrie Lee Davis Glasscock and was married to the late Ester May Talbott Glasscock. He was a contract hauler and in his youth worked with the local CCA, building roads, and attended Grace Baptist Church.
He is survived by two sons, George Edward Glasscock and wife Cheryl of Scottsburg, Billy Hite of Roanoke; daughters, Corina Rogers and husband Willard of Florida, Jane Davis of Greensboro, NC and Geraldine Thompson of Halifax; a sister, Emma Ambrose of Halifax; a brother, Wallace Glasscock and wife Anna of Buffalo Junction; sisters-in-law, Illa “Red” Glasscock and Francis Glasscock and brother-in-law, Robert Ballanger, 15 grandchildren, a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Mike Wetherington officiating. Burial followed in Grace Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mary Frances Shorts

Ms. Mary Frances Shorts, 79, of Richmond, formerly of South Boston, died Sunday, September 14, 2008 at Retreat Hospital, Richmond. She was born in Halifax County on September 23, 1928, a daughter of the late Mr. Marvin Tarsh Shorts and Mrs. Sallie Bell Marable Shorts and was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Ms. Charleta Francenia Shorts of Richmond; one sister, Mrs. Rosa Elvira Gee of South Boston, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Elnora Delacy Vass and one brother, Mr. James N. Shorts.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 19 at 1:00 p.m. at Mt. Olive Baptist Church with burial to follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00-6:30 p.m. on Thursday with public viewing beginning at noon.

Carlton Gale Yates

Mr. Carlton Gale Yates, 81, of L.P. Bailey Memorial Highway, Nathalie, died Tuesday, September 16, 2008 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Pattie Guthrie Yates.
He was born in Lynchburg on March 1, 1927, a son of the late Robert Carlton Yates and Lillian Coates Yates. He was a very active member of Childrey Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, watchman for 29 years, Sunday School teacher and secretary, choir member, cemetery manager, tape ministry, and pulpit committee member. He was a Navy veteran of WWII, a retired farmer and mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Mark E. Yates and wife Robin of Halifax, Steve C. Yates and wife Kimberly of Atlanta, GA, Alan D. Yates of Nathalie; two daughters, Patsy Y. Vaughan and husband Steve of South Boston, Dawn C. Yates of Atlanta, GA; six grandchildren, Kathleen Yates, Ryan Yates, Genavieve Yates, Gabriel Yates, Jessica Vaughan, Melissa Clay and husband Michael.
Funeral services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at Childrey Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry Stanfield and Rev. Bobby Richardson officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Childrey Baptist Church or Brookneal Rescue Squad.

Louise Elmer Conner Sr.

Mr. Louis Elmer Conner, Sr., 73, of 1607 Jeffress Blvd., South Boston died Monday, September 15, 2008. He was born in Halifax County on May 7, 1935, a son of the late Louis William Conner and Estelle Wilborn Conner and was married to Lynda Day Conner. He was a retired supervisor with Dan River Mills.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Lisa C. Brandon of Blanch, NC and Edie D. Staggs of South Boston; one son, Charles Randall Conner; one brother, Don R. Conner of Halifax; grandchildren, Anna Brandon, Katy Brandon, Christopher Ray Davidson, Josh Conner and Justin Drake Davidson and great-grandson, Isaiah Andrew Davidson. He was preceded in death by one son, Louis Elmer Conner, Jr. and one brother, Irvin G. Conner.
Graveside services will be held Monday, September 22 at 11:00 a.m. at Oak Ridge Cemetery with Rev. Ann Davidson officiating. The family will receive friends at the home.

John Robert Blanks

Mr. John Robert “Bobby” Blanks, 72, of 2142 Old Cluster Springs Road, South Boston died Wednesday, September 17, 2008 at Duke University Medical Center. He was born in Halifax County on December 7, 1935, son of Mary Alice Virginia Womack Blanks and the late Lewis Clifton Blanks, Sr. and was married to Nannie Roslynn Moore Blanks. He was a member of Glenwood United Methodist Church, a retired welder with Bromma, Inc. and an Army veteran.
In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by two sons, Robert Derwin Blanks and wife Carry of Stokesdale, NC and David Allen Blanks and wife Dana of South Boston. He was preceded in death by a brother, L.C. Blanks, Jr.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 11:00 a.m. at Brooks Funeral Home with Rev. Bob Woodfin officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Glenwood United Methodist Church.

Florrie Cumbie Ratliff


Ms. Florrie Cumbie “Polly” Ratliff, 95, of 2395 Founders Creek Ct., Midlothian died Tuesday, September 16, 2008 at Johnston Willis Hospital. She was born in Halifax County on March 14, 1913, daughter of the late George Calvin Cumbie and Alice Downey Cumbie and was married to the late James Henry Ratliff, Sr. She was the oldest member of Grace Baptist Church and a homemaker.
She is survived by sons, James Ratliff, Jr. and wife June of Midlothian, John W. Ratliff and wife Diane of Bracey and Jimmy C. Ratliff and wife Mildred of Colonial Heights; daughters, Evelyn Greg of Midlothian and Florence Boswell and husband Roger of South Boston; grandchildren, Brenda Custer, Monte Thompson, Roger Thompson, Karen Russell, Robin Jones, Steve Ratliff, Wanda Hill, Michael Ratliff, Terry Queensberry, Steve Tipton, 19 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by four brothers and five sisters.
