Mabel Fallen Seamster

Mrs. Mabel Fallen Seamster of 4131 Cove Road, Clover died Saturday, September 13, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Born in Halifax County on July 21, 1930, she was 78 at the time of her death. She was the daughter of the late Oda Pearlman Fallen, Sr. and Hattie Watts Fallen and was married to Lenzy Addison Seamster. She was a member of the Providence Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Seamster is survived by her husband of the home, a sister, Thelma F. Seamster of Nathalie, two brothers, Clayton Fallen of Nathalie and Carlton Fallen of Drakes Branch. She was preceded in death by three brothers, David Fallen, O. P. Fallen, Jr. and Samuel Fallen.
A funeral service for Mrs. Seamster will be conducted on Tuesday, September 16 at 2 p.m. at Providence Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jeff Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home Monday evening from 7 until 8:30 p.m. and at other times at her home. Those wishing to give memorials should consider the Providence Presbyterian Church.

William Joseph White Sr.

Mr. William Joseph White Sr., 80, of 6021 Bethel Road, Scottsburg died Wednesday, September 10, 2008 at Duke University Medical Center. He was born in Halifax County on August 28, 1928, a son of the late William Hampton White and Hattie Bell Guill White. He was married to Mary Thomas Owen White, was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and a U.S. Navy Veteran of the Korean Conflict.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, William Joseph (Bill) White Jr. of Scottsburg; one brother, Jerry Herbert White of Newport News; two sisters, Catherine White Womack and Miriam White Burton, both of Halifax. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Richard Edward White, George Hampton White, Wert Lee White and David Bruce White.
Funeral services were held Saturday, September 13 at Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. Bob Rudman officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Richard T. Saunders

The Rev. Richard Thornton Saunders, 65, of 1020 W. Oak Hill Drive, Halifax died Thursday, September 11, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was born in Halifax County on September 15, 1942, a son of the late Charlie Thornton Saunders and Willie Blanche Rowland Saunders. He was married to Laverne Gravely Saunders and was pastor of Centerville Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Theresa S. Thiele and husband Reuben of Lyman, SC; two sons, Mark Saunders of Greenville, SC and Matthew Saunders of Halifax; two grandsons, Shane Johnson and Nick Thiele; seven brothers and sisters, Clyde Saunders and wife Bernice of Nathalie, Roger Saunders and wife Bunny of Vernon Hill, Larry Saunders and wife Linda of Virgilina, Linda Martin and husband Earl of Nathalie, Betty Lloyd and husband Gene of South Boston, Jean Lee and husband Billy of Brookneal, Connie Tuck and husband Tony of Altavista.
Funeral services were held Sunday at Centerville Baptist Church with Rev. Daryl Hancock and Rev. Ralph Neal officiating. Burial followed in Halifax Memorial Gardens. Mary Frances Pleasant

Mrs. Mary Frances Pleasant of 1174 Clover Road, Clover died Thursday, September 11, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 67. Born in Halifax County on September 18, 1940 to the late Mr. Namand Carden and Mrs. Matilda Crews Terry, she was also raised by Mr. Chester L. Terry. She was married to the late Mr. Bernard Pleasant and was a member of St. Matthews Baptist Church of Clover. She was a former employee of Tultex, Inc.
Mrs. Pleasant is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Crystal Wylie and Ms. Sonya Pleasant, both of Clover, seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren, two sisters, Ms. Valerie Carden and Mrs. Adrienne Haynes, both of New York, a brother, Mr. Earnest Carden of New York, a son-in-law, Mr. Stanley Wylie of Clover, three step-daughters, Mrs. Denise P. Davis, Ms. Darry Pleasant and Mrs. Margo Barber, all of New York, a step son, Mr. Howard Haskins of New York, 13 step grandchildren, one step son-in-law, Mr. Herbie Davis of New York, a step daughter-in-law, Mrs. Jeanette Haskins of New York, two sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law, a devoted aunt, Mrs. Elvira Kelly and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, other relatives and friends.
A funeral service for Mrs. Pleasant will be held Tuesday, September 16 at 2 p.m. at St. Matthews Baptist Church in Clover. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Public viewing for Mrs. Pleasant will be conducted on Monday, September 15 from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. at the chapel of Jeffress Funeral Home and the family will receive friends at the home, 1174 Clover Road, Clover.

Elise Lowery Meadows

Mrs. Elise Lowery Meadows, 87, of 4128 East Hyco Road, South Boston died Thursday, September 11, 2008 at The Woodview. She was born in Halifax County on December 15, 1920, a daughter of the late Hunter C. Lowery and Martha Griffin Lowery and was married to the late Joe Lee Meadows. She was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church and a homemaker.
She is survived by a son, Watkins Meadows and his wife Jodi of South Boston. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Rosetta Veasey and Matsu Ford.
Funeral services were held Saturday, September 13 at Shady Grove United Methodist Church with Rev. George Gorman and Rev. Ann Davidson officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Shady Grove United Methodist Church, 4129 East Hyco Road, South Boston, VA 24592.

Jennovia S. Williams

Mrs. Jennovia Simmons Williams of 430 Tanglewylde Drive, Apt. 3-B, South Boston died Thursday, September 11, 2008 at The Woodview in South Boston at the age of 65. Born in Nathalie on December 17, 1942 to the late Mr. John Moses Simmons and Mrs. Fannie Mae Garrett Simmons, she was married to the late Mr. Eugene Williams and was a member of Ellis Creek Baptist Church in Nathalie.
Mrs. Williams is survived by one daughter, Ms. Antoinette Williams of Bronx, NY, five grandchildren, two great grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Mary Brown of Baltimore, MD and Mrs. Louise Poindexter of Nathalie, a brother, Mr. Cleavon Simmons of Baltimore, MD, a brother-in-law, Mr. Ernest Poindexter of Nathalie, a sister-in-law, Mrs. Margaret Simmons of Baltimore, MD, a devoted nephew, Mr. Linwood Poindexter and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends including the devoted Mrs. Alice Womack. Mrs. Williams was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Ella Jackson.
A funeral service for Mrs. Williams will be held Wednesday, September 17 at 2 p.m. at Ellis Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Bruce Featherson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Public viewing for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, September 16 from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. at the Crawford House chapel in Halifax.
