Samuel J. Crenshaw

Mr. Samuel Jefferson Crenshaw, 85, of 1019 Sinai Road, Halifax died Monday, September 8, 2008 at his home. He was born in Halifax County on August 6, 1923, a son of the late Annie Martin Crenshaw and Luther Jefferson Crenshaw and was married to Gay Guill Crenshaw. He was a member of Dan River Baptist Church, where he served as secretary-treasurer of the Men’s Bible Class since 1974, was a member of Dan River Ruritan Club, American Legion Post 8 and was a veteran of World War II.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Jerry Crenshaw and his wife Pam of South Boston; one daughter, Jeanette Booker and husband Kenneth of Chesterfield; two grandsons, Christopher Crenshaw and wife Leona and Scott Booker; two granddaughters, Catherine Lee and husband Jeff and Jennifer Booker; three great-grandchildren, Taylor and Matthew Crenshaw and Daniel Lee.
Funeral services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Doug Gibson and Rev. John Eure officiating. Burial will follow in Dan River Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Halifax Regional Hospice, 2204 Wilborn Avenue, South Boston, VA 24592.

David Lowery Loftis

Mr. David Lowery Loftis, 24, husband of Lindsey Middleton Loftis, died Monday, September 8, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. The son of Tim and Dale Loftis of Virgilina (Hitesburg), David was a graduate of Halifax County High School with the class of 2002 and was employed with Polk Correctional Institute.
In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by his sisters, Karen Loftis and Jessica Loftis; paternal grandparents, Don and Alice Loftis, all of Virgilina (Hitesburg); and maternal grandparents, Elmer and Helen Vaughan of Halifax.
Funeral services will be held today at 11:00 a.m. at Hitesburg Baptist Church, of which he was a member, with the Reverends Bob Watts and Chris Sorensen officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Mary Eliza Cousins Guthrie

Mrs. Mary Eliza Cousins Guthrie, 79, of 1130 Hardings Mill Road, Nathalie died Monday, September 8, 2008 at The Woodview. She was born in Halifax County on December 29, 1928, daughter of the late Mr. James Edward Cousins, Sr. and Mrs. Irene Hunt Cousins. She was married to the late Rev. Henry Garfield Guthrie, Sr. and was a member of Bethel Grove Baptist Church.
She is survived by two sons, Mr. Robert L. Guthrie of San Antonio, TX and Mr. James H. Guthrie of Clinton, MD; two daughters, Ms. Delores Guthrie of Upper Marlboro, MD and Ms. Violet Miller of Richmond; one sister, Mrs. Narcissa Robinson of New York; two brothers, Mr. Mural Cousins of Danville and Mr. Ezikel Cousins of Irvington, NC; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Frances Guthrie and Mrs. Eva Guthrie, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by one son, Mr. Henry G. Guthrie, Jr., one sister and four brothers.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 12 at 1:00 p.m. at Bethel Grove Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home.

Clem Wilborne

Mr. Clem Wilborne, 68, of 1093 Mount Laurel Road, Clover died Sunday, September 7, 2008 at Carver Living Center, Durham, NC. He was born in Halifax County on December 9, 1939, son of the late Mr. Charles Wilborne and Mrs. Margie Coleman Wilborne.
He is survived by a devoted niece, Mrs. LaShaune Wilborne of Bronx, NY; a devoted cousin, Mr. Charles Garrett of Clover, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 13 at 3:00 p.m. at The Crawford House Chapel, Halifax with Rev. Ronald Claiborne officiating. Burial will follow in Bethel Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Public viewing will be Friday from 10:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the home.

Samuel (Sam) R. Carrington

Mr. Samuel (Sam) Richard Carrington, 78, of Cleveland Heights, OH, formerly of South Boston, died at his home. He was born January 11, 1930 in Halifax County, son of the late Mr. Willie Floyd Carrington and Mrs. Nannie Belt Crawley Carrington and was married to Mrs. Ethel Johnson Carrington.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Mr. Samuel Edward (Victoria); two grandchildren, four sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth C. Gerst, Mrs. Susie C. Buie, Mrs. Ida C. Faulkner and Mrs. Mildred C. Martin; two nieces, one nephew, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by one sister, Ms. Eva Carrington and one brother, Mr. Willie Easley Carrington and a nephew.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 12 at Boyd’s Funeral Home, Cleveland, with interment in Lakeview Cemetery.

Louis Maynard Martin

Mr. Louis Maynard Martin, 68, of L.P. Bailey Memorial Highway, Nathalie, died Sunday, September 7, 2008 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Elizabeth Faye Crews Martin.
Mr. Martin was born in Halifax County, September 27, 1939, a son of the late John Maynard Martin and Sybil Doris Morrison Martin. He was a member of Childrey Baptist Church, a Veteran of the VA National Guard and a retired agent for Southern Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Teri M. Simmons and husband Chris, Staci M. Guill and husband Dennis, all of Nathalie; five grandchildren, Katie Guill, Andrew Simmons, Elizabeth Simmons, Madelyn Simmons, Amelia Simmons; one sister, Doris A. Tribble and husband George of Nathalie; one brother, Otey T. Martin and wife Amy of Nathalie; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by a nephew, Christopher Todd Tribble and a sister-in-law, Peggy Jean Montgomery.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, September 10 at Childrey Baptist Church with Rev. Andy Ferguson and Rev. Jerry Stanfield officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
