Ava Love Long Morris
Mrs. Ava Love Long Morris, 90, of 621 Berry Hill Road, South Boston died Sunday, August 24, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Born in Person County, NC on March 13, 1918, she spent most of her life cooking in Long's Drive-In and at several other local restaurants. She was the last survivor of her generation which spanned five generations.
Mrs. Morris is survived by two sons, Burnett Morris and wife Linda of South Boston and Sam Morris and wife Sheryl of Sutherlin and a daughter, Violet Snead and husband Ralph ÒMootÓ of Dryburg, four grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren and two step grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Morris and her parents, John Thomas and Mollie Clayton Long. a son, Irie T. Morris, brothers, Stover, Jatt, James, Taft and Irie Long and sisters, Maddie and Etta Conner and a half brother, Corbett Long and a half sister, Lillie Hubbard.
A funeral service for Mrs. Morris will be conducted on Wednesday, August 27 at 2 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Thomas Wright officiating. Burial will follow in Black Walnut Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 26 from 7 until 8:30 p.m. and at other times at the homes of her children. Kathleen Wolfe Chandler
Mrs. Kathleen Wolfe Chandler of Williamsburg, formerly of Halifax County, died Friday, August 22, 2008 at the Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center. She was born in Greensboro, NC on May 9, 1920 and was 88 at the time of her death. She was the daughter of the late Ernest Wolfe and Nettie Wolfe and was married to the late Randal N. ÒDootsÓ Chandler. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and was a retired bookkeeper for the Leggett Department Store.
Mrs. Chandler is survived by a son, Randy Chandler and wife, Bonnie of Williamsburg, a grandson Mark Nelson Chandler, also two great grandsons, Landon Jones of Williamsburg and Nicholas Chandler of Richmond and two brothers, Raymond Wolfe of Liberty, NC and J. W. Wolfe of Greensboro, NC.
A graveside service for Mrs. Chandler will be conducted Monday, August 25 at 2 p.m. at Oak Ridge cemetery with the Rev. Jack Stewart officiating. Henry Eugene Carrington
Mr. Henry Eugene Carrington, age 59 of Nathalie, died August 21, 2008 in Lynchburg.
He is survived by his wife, Patty H. Jennings, six children Janet Jennings, Bernard Carrington (Pam), Kenneth Carrington, Yvonne Carrington and Aretha Carrington, all of Alexandria; Garnett Jennings of Marietta, GA; four sisters, Irene Jefferson (Thomas), Isabell and Jean Jennings of Alexandria and Iona Jennings (Junior) of Nathalie.
A funeral service for Mr. Carrington will be held on Monday, August 25 at 1 p.m. at the New Shiloh Baptist Church in Nathalie with interment in the church cemetery.

E. Humphries
Rev. Jimmy 'Doc' Edward Humphries,70, of Virgilina, died August 23, 2008 at Duke University Hospital. Born September 6, 1937 in Roxboro, North Carolina, he was the son of the late William ÒRedÓ Edward Humphries of Roxboro, and Pearl Olive Mills Humphries Ritter of Durham, N.C. He was married to Linda Lee Glass Humphries.
He joined the National Guard and was first a member of Company D in Roxboro, N.C. Upon moving to South Boston, he became a member of Company E with the 29th Division of the National Guard. He was given an altitude test in Richmond and was offered a job at the NASA Space Center, but declined because he wanted to be close to family. He was the former owner of Humphries Exhaust Service. He received Christ as savior in August 1982. He became an ordained minister in August 10, 1988. He became burdened for men and women in the prison system and began in 1987 ministering to them at the Halifax Regional Adult Detention center, and was the Chaplain at Camp 23. He was a member of Seven Oaks Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Linda of the home; his children, Andrew Barry Humphries, Sr. of Virgilina. Janice Eugenia H. Arendall and husband Kenneth of South Boston. Mark Dwayne Humphries of Virgilina. Tammy Wynette H.Totherow and husband Grant of Nathalie. 8 grandchildren: Keith W Arendall, Amey R. Totherow, P.F.C. Andrew B. Humphries, Jr., Jennifer E. Arendall, Steven E. Humphries, Manda L.Totherow, Wendie D. Humphries, and Kyle W. Arendall, one step granddaughter Sue Wilborn, one great granddaughter, Hailey Marie Heffernan of Washington, Ind., one great grandson, Landon Wilborn, one brother John 'Ramp' Robert Humphries, Sr.and wife Jean of South Boston, one sister, Dorothy 'Dot' H. Bowman and husband Charlie of Burkesville, Va.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Robert Lee Humprhies, a granddaughter Christina 'Christy' Humphries of Washington, Indiana, one grandson Jonathan C. Arendall of South Boston, two brothers, David 'Dave' Humphries of Durham and Melvin 'Blimp' Lee Humphries of Roxboro.
The viewing will be at Seven Oaks Baptist Church August 26 at 12:00. The service will be conducted by Pastor Jimmy McMillan and will begin at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Providence Baptist Church in Roxboro, N.C. at 3:30 p.m. At other times the family will be receiving friends and family at the home of Barry Humphries, 1024 Zion Hill Ch. Loop Road. Virgilinia.

Roberta Coleman Davis
Mrs. Roberta Coleman Davis, 84, of South Boston died Tuesday, August 19, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was born in Halifax County on August 2, 1924, a daughter of the late Mr. John Coleman and Mrs. Ila Miller Coleman Eley. She was married to the late Mr. James Davis and was a member of Ebenezer CME Church.
She is survived by one son, Mr. Curtis Coleman of Dover, DE and daughter-in-law, Mrs. Dorothy Carr Coleman; two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, including Mr. Noah Shaheed, Mrs. Remonia Wright, Ms. Lanetta Torian and Ms. Veronica Coleman, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by Mrs. Annie C. Massey, Mrs. Bernice Tune, Mrs. Eunice Tucker and Mrs. Edna Coleman.
Funeral services were held Saturday, August 23 at Ebenezer CME Church with Rev. Michele Parker officiating. Burial followed in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Henry Nelson Conner
Mr. Henry Nelson Conner of 5002 Mount Laurel Road, Clover died Thursday, August 21, 2008 at the McGuire Veterans Administration Medical Center in Richmond at the age of 73. Born in Halifax County on November 3, 1934, he was the son of the late Ms. Lillie Conner and was married to Mrs. Martha Ann Moorman Conner. He was a member of the Bethel Grove Baptist Church and was a retired US Army Master Sergeant.
Mr. Conner is survived by his wife, three sons, Mr. Nelson Norvel Conner of Richmond, Mr. Kim Kendal Conner of Clover and Mr. Vincent Vendal Conner of Fort Steward, GA and his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Doris Gunn-Conner, two grandchildren, Mr. Austin Xavier Conner and Ms. Autumn Ellyse Conner, his mother-in-law, Mrs. Elizabeth Moorman of Clover and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
A funeral service for Mr. Conner will be conducted on Tuesday, August 26 at 1 p.m. at the Bethel Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. William Coleman officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with full military rites. The family is receiving friends at the home, 5002 Mount Laurel Road, Clover.

Mr. Michael Wayne Gardner, 64, of 1041 Leigh McKay Trail, South Boston died Thursday, August 21, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was born in Roanoke on January 5, 1944. He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, Richmond, a retired maintenance worker for the Department of the Blind and Air Force veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Deborah Cole Gardner; his mother-in-law, Peggy L. Cole of South Boston; brother-in-law, Craig Cole of Virgilina and niece, Christen Martin and her husband David and daughter Mya.
Funeral services were held Sunday, August 24 at Mt. Cana United Methodist Church with Rev. Randy Holmes officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Mt. Cana United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 1048 Sweet Gum Road, South Boston, VA 24592.
Saunders A. White
Mr. Saunders Aubrey 'Buck' White of 2105 Willow Street, South Boston died Thursday, August 21, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Born December 11, 1910 in Campbell County, he was a retired photo engraver and was a World War II Army veteran. He was a member of Ash Avenue Baptist Church. Mr. White is survived by his wife, Anne Harris White of the home and a son, Bill White and wife, Dianne of Advance, NC and a grandson, Bill White, Jr. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Thomas White and Elizabeth Jones White, and 11 brothers and sisters.
