Virginia Reaves Reeves

Mrs. Virginia Reaves Reeves of Halifax died Friday, August 8, 2008 at her home. Born in Halifax County on July 24, 1917, she was 91 years old at the time of her death. She was the daughter of the late Jessie Finch Reaves and the late Virgie Garrett Reaves and was married to the late Howard Reeves. She was a member of the McKendree Untied Methodist Church was a retired postal clerk.
Mrs. Reeves is survived by four daughters, Melbie Jones and husband, Fred of Andrews, SC, Sandra Clayson and husband Hal of Los Angeles, CA, Myrta Reeves-Murrow and late husband, Charles of Halifax and Sharon Lynn Howard and husband Bob of Mesa, AZ, two sons, Howard F. Reeves and wife Brenda of South Rockwood, MI and Tim Alex Reeves and wife Shirley of Laurens, SC, six sisters, Hazel Spencer and Mary Irby of South Boston, Gladys Simmons of Richmond, Joyce Moore of Talbott, TN, Peggy Barker of Axton and Hilda Thomas of Talbott, TN and a special sister, Georgia Ann High of South Boston, two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Reaves of Alton and Florence Reaves of Sophia, WV, six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister Frenchie Lewis, two brothers, Willis and Ernest Reeves and one great grandchild, Kaily Reeves.
A funeral service for Mrs. Reeves will be conducted on Monday, August 11 at 11 a.m. at McKendree United Methodist Church with the Rev. Brian Simmons officiating. Geraldine V. Moorefield

Mrs. Geraldine Vassar Moorefield of 111 Rose Hill Drive, South Boston died Saturday, August 9, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Born in Republican Grove on January 10, 1920, she was 88 at the time of her death. She was the daughter of Ruth Snead Vassar and James William Vassar and was a member of the Winns Creek Baptist Church and a volunteer at The Woodview Nursing Home.
Mrs. Moorefield is survived by four daughters, Joanne Ferrell and Delores Smith of Halifax, Gloria Reynolds and Carolyn Hopkins of Danville, a son, John Edward Moorefield, III of Richmond and one sister, Audrey Hill of Republican Grove and a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A funeral service for Mrs. Moorefield will be held Monday, August 11 at the Winns Creek Baptist Church at 11 a.m. with the Rev. James Kopco officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Maggie Chandler Oliver

Mrs. Maggie Chandler Oliver of 4012 Turbeville Road, Alton died August 8, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 86. Born in Halifax County on February 15, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Mr. Will Chandler and Mrs. Callie Crawley Oliver and was married to the late Mr. Joseph M. Oliver. She was a member of Cross Roads Baptist Church.
Mrs. Oliver is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Frances Owen and Mrs. Gwendolyn Ragland, both of Virgilina, and Mrs. Margaret Owen of Richmond, a son, Mr. Robert Oliver of Turbeville, a sister, Mrs. Iola Wade of Blanche, NC, a brother, Mr. John Chandler of South Boston, ten grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, two sons-in-law, Mr. Roy Owen and Mr. Jimmie Ragland, three daughters-in-law, Mrs. Julia Oliver, Mrs. Agnes DeWitt and Mrs. Odella Oliver and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by a son, James Oliver and two brothers, Ralph (Buck) and Elbert (Peter) Chandler.
A funeral service for Mrs. Oliver will be conducted on Monday, August 11 at 2 p.m. at Cross Roads Baptist Church with interment to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home, 4012 Turbeville Road, Alton.

Louise Winstead Malone

Mrs. Louise Winstead Malone, 83, of 1060 White Lane, Alton died Wednesday, August 6, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was born in Halifax County on May 9, 1925, a daughter of the late Mr. Roland Winstead and Mrs. Rosa Pointer Winstead. She was married to the late Mr. Glennie Moore and was a member of Greater Brandon Missionary Baptist Church.
She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Mary Doomes, Mrs. Rosa Brandon, Mrs. Julia Oliver, all of Alton and Mrs. Shelia Gravitt of Roxboro, NC; three sons, Mr. Charles Malone of East Orange, NJ, Mr. Tom Malone of Durham, NC and Mr. Roland Malone of Alton; two sisters, Mrs. Charlotte Angel and Ms. Nellie Winstead, both of Albany, NY; 37 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren; three daughters-in-law, Mrs. Alice Malone, Mrs. Laurell Malone and Mrs. Sally Malone; one son-in-law, Mr. Douglas Oliver; two sisters-in-law, other relatives and friends, including the close and devoted Mrs. Ola Mae Brandon and Mrs. Maggie Oliver. She was preceded in death by three sons, Mr. John Malone, Mr. James Malone, Mr. Clyde Malone and a daughter, Mrs. Bernice Malone.
Funeral services were held Sunday, August 10 at Greater Brandon Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Floyd Stanfield officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Peggy M. Murray

Mrs. Peggy McCormick Murray, 68, of 563 Tabernacle Road, Buffalo Junction died Thursday, August 7, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was born in Halifax County on April 1, 1940, a daughter of the late Alonza Lennie McCormick and Florida Owen McCormick and was married to Edsil Smith Murray. She was a member of Catawba Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by three brothers, Lawrence McCormick and wife Doris of Halifax, David McCormick and wife Jean of South Boston, Bill McCormick and wife Janet of Forest; four sisters, Frances Womack and Annie Womack, both of Vernon Hill, Lorine Throckmorton of Scottsburg and Patsy Holcombe and husband Tommy of Volens; two step-children, Michael Murray of Clarksville and Bonny Martinez of Willow Springs, NC. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Charlie D. McCormick, Sr. and James H. (Bud) McCormick.
Funeral services were held Sunday, August 10 at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Don Bryant officiating. Burial followed in Liberty Christian Church Cemetery. Mildred Talbott Guthrie

Mrs. Mildred Talbott Guthrie, 89, of Alton died Monday, August 4, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was born August 11, 1918 in Mecklenburg County and was married to the late Aubrey Guthrie. She was a member of Alton Baptist Church and retired from JPS Converter.
She is survived by two brothers, Edward C. Talbott and wife Barbara of South Boston and W.C. Talbott and wife Danese of Wallace, NC; grandchildren, James Owen, Aubrey Owen, Cindy Guthrie, Robin Taylor, Tiffany Terry. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Rachel G. Wilson and son, Raymond Guthrie, sisters Esther Glasscock and Ruth Puryear, brothers Coleman Talbott, Luther Talbott and Clifton Talbott and grandchildren, Eddie Michael Owen, Skeeter Guthrie and Vickie Drew.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 6 at Brooks Funeral Home with Rev. Michael Texiera officiating. Burial followed in Halifax Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be directed to the Halifax County Cancer Association, P.O. Box 875, South Boston, VA 24592.
