Larry D. Coblentz
Mr. Larry D. Coblentz of 3090 Hunting Creek Road, Nathalie died Tuesday, August 5, 2008 in Mecklenburg County. He was born in Dover, Delaware on August 18, 1990 and was 17 years of age. He was the son of Daniel F. Coblentz and Fannie Mae Coblentz. He was a carpenter.
Mr. Coblentz is survived by his father and mother of Nathalie and six brothers, Robert Coblentz and wife Ruby of Nathalie, Jonathan Coblentz and wife Ruthie of Hartly DE, Joseph, Emanuel, Paul and Raymond Coblentz, all of Nathalie and four sisters: Rhoda Ann and husband Samuel Troyer of Hartly, DE, Lisa, Laura Fern and Rose Mary Coblentz, all of Nathalie, two nephews, three neices, a grandfather and a grandmother and one great grandfather. He was preceded in death by a grandfather, a grandmother and three cousins.
A funeral service for Mr. Coblentz will be conducted on Friday, August 8 at 8:30 a.m. at the Daniel Coblentz Home in Nathalie with Minister Menno Petershiem from Shipwana, Indiana officiating. Burial will follow in the Amish Cemetery at Nathalie, Virginia.
Johnny Edward Jones
Mr. Johnny Edward Jones of 1187 Brooklyn Road, Sutherlin died Tuesday, August 5, 2008 at his home. Born in Halifax County on April 29, 1948, he was an Army veteran and was employed by Lasco Bathware. He was a member of Southside Baptist Church and was a member of Vietnam Veterans of America.
Mr. Jones is survived by a daughter, Jillian Elizabeth Jones of Sutherlin and a special friend, Candace Lynn Slayton of Nathalie, two brothers, Cecil Jones and wife, Tammy of Halifax and Daniel Jones of Oak Level, a sister, Arlene Stevens of Chase City and a nephew, Thomas Edward Jones and other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda Gail Watson Jones and his parents, Johnny Kent Jones and Susie Conner Jones and a sister, Shirley Jones.
A graveside service for Mr. Jones will be conducted on Friday, August 8 at 11 a.m. at Arbor Baptist Chruch cemetery with the Rev. Don Bryant officiating. Online condolences may be sent to brooksfh@embarqmail.com.
Walter Albert Davis
Mr. Walter Albert Davis, 88, of 118 Wilmouth Avenue, South Boston died Sunday, August 3, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was born in Halifax County on April 18, 1920, son of the late Henry Thomas Davis and Rose Phillips Davis. He was of the Baptist faith and retired Machinist with Halifax Cotton Mill.
He is survived by daughters, Nancy D. Hill and husband Bill of South Boston, Sheila D. Henry and husband Stephan of Glocester, RI, Tammy Fitch of South Boston, Krista D. Conner and husband Tony of South Boston; sons, Phil R. Davis of South Boston and Marty J. Davis and wife Amy of Haysi; sister, Lucy Watts and husband Harvie of South Boston; grandchildren, Jeff Hill and wife Kelly, Jennifer Laughorn and husband Craig, Sarah Henry, Nathan Henry, Sean Davis, Meagan Fitch, Travis Whitt, Emily Conner, Allie Conner, Chase Conner, Zachary Davis and great-grandchildren, Sarah Laughorn, Caroline Laughorn, Abby Hill; mother of his children, Jo Davis and special friends Gloria Fleig and Donna Shiflett. He was preceded in death by a sister, Susie Snow and brothers George Davis, William Davis, Shirley Ray Davis and Milford Davis.

Maude S. Powell
Mrs. Maude Saunders Powell of Halifax died Tuesday, August 5, 2008 at Berry Hill Nursing Home. She was born in Halifax County on November 8, 1919 and was 88 at the time of her death. She was the daughter of the late Johnnie Carson Saunders and Minnie Moore Saunders and was married to the late Eugene Wilson Powell. She was a member of Beth Car Baptist Church.
Mrs. Powell is survived by three daughters, Darlene P. Powell of Halifax, Faye P. Hudson and husband Bradley of Halifax and Denise P. Welcher and husband, Mike of Virgilina and two sons, Ronnie C. Powell and wife Brenda of Halfiax and Darrell R. Powell and wife Susan of South Boston, nine grandchildren, Kim Wickemeyer and husband Colter and Charlene Conner and husband Tom, all of South Boston, Richard C. Powell and Jonah Powell, both of Halifax, Tricia Crews and husband Bill of Nathalie, Christi Hudson of South Boston, Joshua Powell of Clover and Jared Welcher of Virginia Beach and Whitney Welcher of Virgilina, and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Wilson Powell, one sister, Alice S. Bowen and two brothers, Johnnie and Sanford Saunders.
A graveside service for Mrs. Powell will be conducted on Saturday, August 9 at 11 a.m. at Halifax Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Don Bryant officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Denise Welcher, 7116 Bill Tuck Highway, Virgilina. Mary Elizabeth Carr
Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Carr, age 73, formerly of Halifax, died Friday, August 1, 2008 in Alexandria. Born in Halifax County to the late Mrs. Katherine L. Barbour Jones and the late Mr. Alonza A. Jones, she was married to Mr. David Carr, Jr.
Mrs. Carr is survived by her husband, ten children Ñ six daughters, Barbara Banks and Linda Hunter of Dumfries, Mary Ann Carr and Emma Carr of Alexandria, Gloria Howell (James) of Fort Washington, MD and Jewel Carr of Washington, DC and four sons, Ricky Carr of Dumfries, James Carr and Michael Carr of Alexandria and Otis Carr of Lorton; six sisters, Catherine Dunkley, Fannie Lewis (Lonell), Emma Henry (Shirley), Estelle Kirby (John), Annie Barksdale (Kevin), Margaret Pound (Jasper); five brothers, John Jones (Virginia), Douglas Jones, Robert Jones, William Jones and Jessie Jones (Lois), sixteen grandchildren, three great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Charles Dudley "C.D." Cassada
Mr. Charles Dudley "C.D." Cassada, 85, of 1019 Greenway Lane, Halifax died Sunday, August 3, 2008 at Durham Regional Hospital. He was born in Halifax County on May 2, 1923, a son of the late Charlie Daniel Cassada and Virginia Wilborn Cassada and was married to Dorothy Powell Cassada. He was a member of First Baptist Church, South Boston where he served as Assistant Treasurer for many years, was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II and was a retired Postmaster of the South Boston Post Office.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Ellen C. Johnson of Halifax; two sisters, Lucille Cassada and Kathleen C. Johnson, both of South Boston and one sister-in-law, Lois C. Cassada of South Boston.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 6 at Powell Funeral Home with Rev. Susan Davis officiating. Burial followed in Halifax Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be directed to Halifax County Humane Society, P.O. Box 969, South Boston, VA 24592.
Helen Louise W. Canada
Ms. Helen Louise Womack Canada, 67, of 1178 Reverend Coleman Road, Clover died August 4, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was born in Halifax County on February 13, 1941, daughter of the late Mr. Jessie Lee Womack and Mrs. Marie Mitchell Womack. She was a member of Spanish Grove Baptist Church and was employed by Clays Mill Elementary School.
She is survived by one daughter, Ms. Sylvia Canada of Halifax; four sons, Mr. Vincent Canada of Lynchburg, Mr. Wilson Canada of South Boston, Mr. James Canada and Mr. Tony Canada, both of Halifax; two sisters, Mrs. Agnes Sydnor of Scottsburg and Mrs. Alberta Jones of Baltimore, MD; five brothers, Mr. Isadore Womack of Richmond, Mr. Charlie Womack, Mr. Enoch Womack, Mr. Michael Womack and Mr. Gregory Womack, all of Scottsburg; four grandchildren, one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Tammy Canada; four sisters-in-law, Mrs. Effie Womack, Mrs. Glenda Womack, Mrs. Carla Womack and Mrs. Marion Womack; other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by three daughters, Ms. Juanita Canada, Ms. Shenita Canada and Ms. Ella Mae Canada and one son, Mr. Nathaniel Eddie Canada.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 9 at 2:00 p.m. at Spanish Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Ronnie Womack officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home, 1178 Reverend Coleman Road, Clover.
Lidie Jones Garber
Mrs. Lidie Jones Garber, 98, of Halifax died Tuesday, August 5, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was born in Buckingham County on August 24, 1909, a daughter of the late Marion Tandy Jones and Eliza Lewis Jones and was married to the late Kermit R. Garber. She was a member of Beth Car Baptist Church, a volunteer at Halifax Regional Hospital where she was awarded her 50 year pin for serving 10,000 volunteer hours, was a graduate of Farmville Teacher's College (now Longwood University) and taught school for 37 years with 31 years in Halifax County.
She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews and friends.
Funeral services will be held today at 11:00 a.m. at Powell Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Michael Parnell officiating. The family will receive friends today from 10:30 a.m. until service time at Powell Funeral Home.
