Mary Wilson Knott
Mrs. Mary Wilson Knott, 86, formerly of 65 Olive Branch Road, died Friday, August 2, 2008 at Morton Manor Rest Home. Born in Person County, Mrs. Knott was the daughter of the late Tom and Pattie Wilson Poole and wife of the late Johnnie Wilson and Luther Knott. She was preceded in death by her brother, Victor Poole and sisters, Hazeline Poole, Estelle Schuman and Blanche Wilson. She retired with 20 years of service at Ideal Zipper and was a member of Olive Branch Baptist Church.
Mrs. Knott is survived by her children, John Wayne Wilson of South Boston, Glenn Wilson of Clover, Elaine W. Thorton of Roxboro and Deborah W. Roll of Semora, a brother, Leamon Poole of Roxboro, two sisters, Rosa Mae Whitlow of Virgilina and Jeanie P. Cheeseman of Glendale, Calif., seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
A funeral service for Mrs. Knott was held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Olive Branch Baptist Church with the Rev. Norman Talley and Dr. Victor Blackwell officiating. Burial will follow in the Virgilina cemetery.

Richard Eugene Gayles
Mr. Richard Eugene Gayles of 305 Monroe Street, South Boston died July 29, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 49. Born in Mecklenburg County on August 31, 1958 to Mr. Ned Gayles, Jr and Mrs. Eva Smith Gayles, both of Chase City, he was married to Mrs. Pamela Henderson Gayles and was a member of Bluestone Baptist Church. Mr. Gayles was an employee of Presto Products, Incorporated of South Boston.
In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by one daughter, Ms. Brittany Nicole Gayles and one son, Mr. Tevin Lamar Gayles, both of South Boston, a brother, Mr. Ronnie M. Gayles of Chase City, a granddaughter, Ms. Shimya Nicole Gayles, his mother-in-law, Mrs. Jane H. Henderson and a brother-in-law, Mr. James F. Henderson, both of South Boston, a sister-in-law, Mrs. Karen Gayles of Chase City and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A funeral service for Mr. Gayles was conducted on Saturday, August 2 at 2 p.m. at Bluestone Baptist Church in Chase City with the Rev. Lawrence T. Wilkerson officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Eppie Hill
Mr. Eppie Hill, 85, of Halifax County died July 27, 2008 in South Boston. He was born in Halifax County to the late Tom and Lillie Traynham Hill.
Mr. Hill is survived by his brother, Ollie Hill (Iola) of New Carrolltown, Md, his adopted family, Shirley Coleman, Connie Carner, Mary Coleman, Janice Yarborough, James Garner and Deborah Russell and devoted friends, Louise, Robert, Joe, Tammy, Earl and Donna Glass and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A funeral service for Mr. Hill was conducted on Sunday, August 3 at 2 p.m. at Sunflower Baptist Church in Nathalie with the Rev. Robert Tucker officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Condolences may be emailed to Jeffressfh@aol.com.
Walter Albert Davis
Mr. Walter Albert Davis of 118 Wilmouth Avenue, South Boston died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Born in Halifax County on April 18, 1920, he was 88 at the time of his death. Mr. Davis was of the Baptist faith and was a retired machinist for Halifax Cotton Mill. He was U.S. Army veteran.
Mr. Davis is survived by four daughters, Nancy D. Hill and husband, Bill, Tammy Fitch, Krista D. Conner and husband, Tony, all of South Boston and Shella D. Henry and husband Stephan of Gloucester, Mass. and and two sons, Phil R. Davis of South Boston and Marty J. Davis and wife, Amy of Haysi, Va. Also surviving are grandchildren Jeff Hill and wife, Kelly, Jennifer Laughorn and husband Craig, Sarah Henry and husband, Nathan, Sean Davis, Megan Fitch, Travis Whitt, Emily Conner, Allie Conner, Chase Conner, and Zachary Davis and great grandchildren, Sarah Laughorn, Caroline Laughorn, Abby Hill and a number of nieces and nephews. Also surviving are a sister, Lucy Watts and husband, Harvie of South Boston, Jo Davis, the mother of his children, special friends Gloria Fleig and Donna Shiflett. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Thomas Davis and Rose Phillips Davis and brothers, George Davis, William Davis, Shirley Ray Davis and Milford Davis.
A funeral service for Mr. Davis will be conducted on Wednesday, August 6 at 2 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Don Bryant officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, Aug. 5 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Nancy and Bill Hill, 105 Duncan Court, South Boston. Thomas William Coleman
Mr. Thomas William Coleman of 1026 Gatha's Trail, Halifax died Saturday, August 2, 2008 at his home at the age of 66. Born in Halifax County on February 17, 1942, he was the son of the late Mr. William Ruffin Coleman and Mrs. Lucy Mitchell Coleman Gears.
Mr. Coleman is survived by one sister, Mrs. Willie Diane Blakey of Vernon Hill, three brothers, Mr. Henry Coleman of South Boston, Mr. Haygood Coleman of Halifax and Mr. Leandrew Coleman of Newark, NJ, two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Mary Coleman of South Boston and Mrs. Henrietta Coleman of Newark, N.J., two aunts, one uncle and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A funeral service for Mr. Coleman will be held Tuesday, August 5 at 11 a.m. at the Crawford House Chapel in Halifax with Rev. Dr. Otis Dillard officiating. Donnald Patrick Tutt
Mr. Donnald Patrick Tutt of 3158 Shady Grove Church Road, Virgilina died Friday, August 1, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 57. Born in Burlington, N.C. on December 6, 1950 to Mrs. Dorothy King Stephens and the late Mr. Andrew Tutt, he was married to Mrs. Gwendolyn Buster Tutt and was a member of Blue Wing Grove Baptist Church.
Mr. Tutt is survived by his wife of the home, two daughters, Mrs. Stephanie Richardson of Danville and Ms. Jaime Tutt of Durham, NC, two sons, Mr. Vincent Tutt of Richmond and Mr. Quentin Tutt of Virgilina, nine grandchildlren, his mother, four sisters, Mrs. Hulda Marie Foust of Burlington, Mrs. Dorothy Parham and Mrs. Sheila Campbell, both of Petersburg, and Mrs. Mae Muriel Pointer of Alton, seven brothers, Mr. William King of Rosedale, N.Y., Mr. Joe Stephens of South Boston, Mr. Fredrick Stephens of El Paxo, Texas, Mr. Roger Stephens of Suffolk, Mr. Ezander Stephens of Baltimore, Md., Mr. Waverly Stephens and Mr. Henry Lee Stephens, both of N.Y., one son-in-law, Mr. Travis Richardson, two brothers-in-law, four sisters-in-law, an uncle, two aunts, a life long devoted friend, Mrs. Diana Edmonds of South Boston and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
