A 27 year old Halifax County man was arrested late Friday night in Room 152 of the Days Inn and charged with the seizure of suspected crack cocaine and having an illegal firearm and drug paraphernalia.
Luther Vashaun Powell was arrested at 11:52 p.m. by members of the Halifax/South Boston Regional Narcotics and Gang Task Force along with the Virginia State Police Tactical Unit and members of the South Boston Police Department and the Halifax County Sheriff's Office.
Powell was transported to the Blue Ridge Regional Jail and taken before the magistrate where he was held without bond. Investigation into the incident is continuing with more charges pending.
The Halifax/South Boston Regional Narcotics and Gang Task Force has also served indictments on several other individuals including 35 year old Troy Williams of South Boston who is charged with one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and one count of distributing marijuana. Kevan Brown, 33, also of South Boston, has been charged with two counts of distributing cocaine and two counts of conspiracy to distribute cocaine.
Twenty-seven year old Truman Wood of South Boston was charged with one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Wood had been found guilty in Halifax County Circuit Court on Friday, November 21 of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a controlled substance. Sentencing will come at a later date.
