Waste transfer station is now ready to go
The County’s new transfer station for the collection of solid waste is now complete, according to County Administrator Bryan Foster. The station located in the corner of the former Georgia Pacific site off Pl;ywood Trail, has undergone state inspections and now Foster says, he is just awaiiting permits so as to begin operations.
Some seeding of the lot and general clean-up remains yet to be done, he said.
“I think it’s just a matter of the paperwork being completed,” Foster said Tuesday. The County Administrator said he hoped to start operating by the end of this week, although he feared the Labor Day holiday might delay the opening until next week.
In the meantime South Boston officials said during their week-end retreat that the mileage the Town’s two garbage trucks have added by making so many trips to the Boydton regional landfill over the past eight months has averaged about 450 miles per week compared to the 50 miles per week they were averaging prior to the closure of the South Boston landfill. South Boston Public Works Director Alan Auld estimated the cost of replacing the trucks, which he said are pretty much worn out, at some $300,000.
